Against a stock 980Ti yes but you have to account for the really strong OCs many 980Ti’s can achieve. Like for like its not 60% I wish it was but its not.

It’s still a good upgrade though at the prices the OP is talking about, on that I think we all agree on.

In the vast majority of cases it’s 60% or more even both at stock and both OC’d. In a lot of those videos it’s nearly touching 2x the performance at 1440p.

A 1080Ti is some 40%+ over even a 1080.

A 980Ti can do roughly 1300mhz with a decent cooler? 1080Ti can also do pretty much the same increase at 2-2.1ghz with a decent cooler.

Yep, anyone who has used a 4/4 CPU in the last couple of years knows how bad they are in today's open world games, can't imagine how stuttery it would be with a 1080ti that would most likely sit at sub 50% usage while the CPU is maxed out

Agreed, 4/4 thread are really stuttery.

The people disagreeing obviously haven't tried a 4 thread cpu with a high end graphics card in the last few years.

Either that or they are getting muddled up on what model i5 it is.

When I switched from 3570k 4.8ghz to a 4ghz 8400 you are talking twice the minimum frame rate on a lot of games.

A sweeping statement of a stuttery mess is utter tosh because not all games are CPU dependant. So yes it is utter tosh.

Mention the games its a stuttering mess in and you might have more credibility.

Its like saying a 750ti cant run any games at maximum settings. Yet it can depending on the game.

I've had 7 different 980 Tis yes 7! My worst clocking one was 1418mhz hovered high 1300s (FE MODEL) my 2 best were 1515 & 1527 mhz. Gigabyte water force and EVGA Classified respectively. The rest were mid 1400 all achieved +500 or more on the memory. I've had 2 different 1080 Tis zotac extreme and evga FE both clocked around 2ghz. I noticed a bigger difference overclocking the 980 Ti vs the 1080 Ti. Bith great cards of their time for the price. At 4k I noticed a near 2x the performance in some games vs the 980 Ti. I'm actually looking at buying another 1080 Ti to replace my 1080 as they're cracking cards!

Mine doesn't do too badly on the core; ~1465 is about the highest I've seen it do though the memory seems to only reach about the same level of difference (250 - 265), not the 500 you've attained. Amazing cards, though.

Hitman games, Kingdon Come Deliverance, Shadow of Tomb Raider, AC Oddysey, Just Cause/Far Cry games all hit quite hard

Not for £300 total you wouldnt.

Utter tosh it wont be a stuttery mess. For £175 a 1080ti if you manage it at that price will be a bargain. Its like a 2070 original performance. Just overclock the 4690k a bit and it will be fine.

Yeah, "utter tosh". Not like I literally upgraded my 4670k @ 4.6ghz for that exact reason.

When was the last time you played any new AAA game on a 4c4t? Go try and and play Battlefield V multiplayer, AC:O, Tomb Raider etc and then come back and tell me about the "utter tosh". Stuttery. Mess.

My brothers PC, same CPU but 4.5ghz GTX 1070 1080p plays fine.

Has everyone overlooked the OPs PSU? (675w) Are you sure this will cope with a 1080 TI?

I personally went from an EVGA 980Ti to an EVGA 1080Ti (SC Black Edition GAMING) and it was quite a performance boost. Around 50% when gaming at 3440 x 1440, not great gains at 1080p but I only ran some benchmarks at 1080p

Rest of spec

EVGA Supernova 850 G2
Gigabyte Z97-Gaming 7
16GB DDR 3
Xonar Essense ST
i7 [email protected]
EVGA GTX 1080Ti SC black@stock

At stock, the 1080ti automatically boosts to 1949mhz, memory to 5508mhz

The 1080TI will make your max FPS higher, but gaming will still be a stuttery mess on the 4690k. I'd rather have the lower max fps the 980TI provides and an upgraded CPU/Mobo/Ram set up to facilitate smooth gameplay first.

That said, £300 for a 1080TI is a decent price. But you'll likely be able to get that kind of performance at that price point new with the next generation of cards, so if you can hold out for 6 months then it'll be worth it.

spot on

Whilst how much stutter you're willing to accept or even notice may be a personal subjective thing, and a certain level of stutter might be "fine" for you, the fact is that stuttering in and of itself is not a subjective thing. It is very objective. Evidenced and measured by spikes in frametimes.

I'd throw into question that if someone is the type of gamer that can't notice stutter, then really what is the point of buying a more powerful GPU? If you can't notice stutter, you certainly aren't going to notice higher max FPS.

LOL @ people saying the i5 will make it a stuttery mess

The 1080TI has been out for years, the i5 was quite common back when the 1080TI was released and I can't remember any reviews saying it was a stuttery mess. Yes a better CPU will offer a small bump in performance but the exaggeration going on in this thread is ridiculous

Well Dave, it might surprise you to know that since the 1080TI was released, a whole bunch of games have been released. And even more surprisingly, a lot make use of more than 4 threads.

Wanna know what's even crazier? In 2017 when the 1080TI was released, the CPUs it was reviewed on were like the:

-4960x (6 cores 12 threads) https://www.anandtech.com/show/11180/the-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-ti-review/4
-6950x (10 cores 20 threads) https://www.techradar.com/uk/reviews/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-ti
-7700k (4 cores 8 threads) https://www.gamersnexus.net/hwreviews/2830-nvidia-gtx-1080-ti-fe-review-and-game-benchmarks/page-2
-5960x (8 cores 16 threads) https://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/msi_geforce_gtx_1080_ti_gaming_x_trio_review,11.html

etc etc.

Surprised me as well mate, but unbelievably they weren't testing a £700 graphics card with a mid-range CPU from 2014.

But the biggest surprise Dave, is the impact a CPU can have on your frames. Most important is frametimes, of course, but if you really care about maxing out FPS as well then...

https://youtu.be/D6RsDyMn2gY?t=479

You know, just that "small bump" and exaggeration of nearly doubling the FPS on a modern CPU (on a 2080TI). Granted, it won't double the frames on a 980TI, but it will clear up the stutter AND likely give him a nice bump on max frames.

Edit: Oh forgot to add the LOL
