I tend to play PC games (MMO's) mostly with a couple of friends, we're all older so prefer text chatting.

If I play on console I'm generally on my own in random lobby's. Most people are idiots or screaming kids. Every so often I get matched with someone who is trying to be genuinely good at the game and I get along with them.

As @arknor said, I think the gaming pool of people as become very dialuted these days. So the good adult people in random lobbies are few and far between.

Eve Online is the only game I really bothered with voice comms in a more general setting - also required for more organised ops, etc. other than that only really used it for competitive gameplay such as Quake 3 tournies.

I have my old smartphone sitting in a drawer doing nothing, could I install the Discord app onto that and use it instead of buying a microphone?
You could, but I don't the audio quality would be great. It depends on the phone. I know that'll be an instant turn off for most people who primarily use discord as a pure communication service. You could get a cheap headset or standalone mic that will far significant microphone / audio quality

I don't play with an headset, can't see the point. I prefer to have my sound pumped through my hi-fi system.

To each their own then, it'll be quite difficult to find a stable group like that though. Discord mobile is quite good but getting constant audio feedback (echo/distortion and etc) will get annoying. Some people alright with. It wouldn't be pleasant hearing the same thing again but with 7th gen console effects.

I have a buddy who uses discord mobile with his phone microphone, the audio is terrible but we're putting up with it as his upgrading his setup soon.

Not all about you though. I don't want to hear someone else's sounds when trying to play my game. If you want to play socially, with comms you have to follow some etiquette.

The only way to play online, with comms is with a headset IMO. It's horrible when anyone turns their speakers on.

Yes, but I can't wear a headset for medical reasons so it's not really an option.

Then, that's different to a preference.

Discord does have a new noise suppression, which is quite good, but obviously you'd have to be mindful of the volume of the speakers etc.

Discord's audio suppression is awful with standalone mics. God forbid you used a phone microphone. Are you refering to the beta krisp mode? It just makes it 10 times worse

I briefly tried it, and it seemed to work ok for me. It stopped keyboard noise anyway.

Agreed, but I spend most of the game thinking I'm talking. Nobody in my group uses push to talk and nobody has any issues. Don't think many people use push to talk anymore?
I do, religiously. I team with plenty of people who don't and kids screaming, dogs barking, wives and Gf's chatting to them, doorbells, sirens, coughs, sneezes and everything else you can think of do sometimes grate. Push to talk should be the minimum. I use the 'back' button on my mouse so don't even need to lift any fingers off buttons.
