what is this for and do i need to keep it ?

Some motherboards included them for setting jumpers, mine came with a slot one motherboard for my mighty celeron 333 :)

Worked on many a MB with jumpers, never seen one with this thing though - we always used long nose pliers to pull links.
Suppose it makes sense in some configurations.

I’ve come across them before, as has been said I’m sure it’s for jumpers.

Thinking about, I think I’ve still got one in the man drawer.

Yeah in the good old days lol
Ide Hard drives had to be set to master and slave by moving jumpers on them
That made getting them off easier
As could be 2 or 3 adjacent jumpers so trying to do it with your fingers was a pita
Think of it like the fuse puller for removing fuses in your car
The dvd eject pins were just straight like sim eject pins for some modern phones
