I'd wait if I were you. Ryzen 4xxx series and new gen of GPUs towards the end of the year should be interesting.

I have a 1080 as well and it struggles in some games at 1440p/144Hz without dropping settings. Current upgrade options don't seem worth it at all for modest performance increases (even worse right now with GPU prices up from the pandemic), so I am waiting on next gen to make it worthwhile

Don't bother waiting for the Ryzen 4000 CPUs - the performance boost isn't expected to be that great. And if they are a real boost, you'll be able to upgrade easily. Do wait for the Ryzen B550 motherboards due in 3 weeks and the Intel B & H motherboards due at the same time. Then you will be able to best choose between Intel & AMD. Buy your CPU, motherboard, and RAM then. Set aside £1,000 for a GPU upgrade in August / September - hopefully the 3080 Ti will cost nowhere near that but you never know.

15%+ IPC gains sounds good to me... If it was a new build fair enough but the 4790k will do a decent enough job for a few months - comes down to how much of a rush OP is in to upgrade

Were the 2080 ti cards around £1200 at launch ? 3080 ti could be around £1400, who knows with the pricing, things keep to be getting more expensive

A few weeks ago it was 10%. But anyway the 4000 series CPUs are about 8 months off. That's too long to wait.

8 months? They're due before the end of the year... Either way it's for OP to decide what's too long, not like the 4790k is unusable

fair enough - just seen there's a refresh due in July apparently with a 3600XT, 3800XT and 3900XT coming out so may be worth waiting for at least that!

I can't even recommend the B550 boards tbh, they are overpriced and don't bring anything in my eyes over the X570, which is more future proof.

I'd go for something like this if it was my money... As you have a fairly decent budget, I went for the 'slightly better' option than usual on the components. ;)

RAM - 32GB is becoming quite useful for Adobe software these days. I was going to spec the Corsair kit but for £20 more you can get the TG B-Die C16 which is better.

PSU - stock is still pretty bare on PSUs, but there are some decent models about still. I was borderline suggesting the 550w model for £35 less as it's on sale, but then thought if the new Nvidia Ampere GPUs are more power hungry, you might appreciate that extra headroom getting a 650w PSU?

NVMe - drive wise, again I was borderline suggesting the SN550, but with the Black SN750 on sale for £25 more with better read/write and NAND, why not? That said, if you'd like a 2TB drive you can get the Adata XPG SX8200 Pro 2TB for only £227 which is a great price atm (you'll have to look online to find it, OcUK don't stock XPG and they're cheapest 2TB NVMe in stock is £300 lol)

Case - entirely personal preference, I just like the P400A as a go-to, it's a great all rounder with good airflow for the money.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,068.86 (includes shipping: £0.00)
