51 posts in and no one has mentioned Watership Down.

If you really want to screw your kids up let them watch that.

Yep! I cried and cried after seeing that film, stick with me for weeks!

Totally random but Willow gave me nightmares! I did not like those trolls!!!!

Absolutely, they were horrendous!

The worst experience for me was watching some of The Thing at about 9 or 10 years old. My parents had gone out for the evening so my oldest brother planned for us all to watch it. We had the lights off, volume turned up high. It was amazing, I was completely gripped. My parents came home and obviously got angry that my brother had allowed us to watch it. My dad allowed us to watch films like Predator he'd seen before and knew when to censor, they often had some of the worst parts edited out on terrestrial TV at the time anyway, but knew this was too much. We protested but he was firm, switched on Match of the Day and sent us to bed.

He was right, I had horrendous recurring nightmares of the kennel scene and spent a week sleeping in my parents bedroom! I love the film now however, definitely one of my all time greats.

The thing that did it for me as a child(and still does now) is the original vinyl "War of the Worlds"
The pictures inside the album cover were just horrendous for a child to see and i still cant look at them for more than a few seconds even now in my 40`s. But the absolute worst part is the damn soundtrack, both the alien sounds and the opening bars still send me cold to this day and i will literally move away from wherever it is playing. No coincidence im sure that its what my elder brother and sister used to use when my parents were out to stop me being a little ****

The view of the underside of my bed was a common sight LOL

Was it round the twist?

Robocop got me too but it was the melting guy, "I'm melting, I'm melting" then gets hit by a car

Also some film they made us watch in English class about if a nuke went off in England, I had dreams of it happening every so often for years after that
No, definitely CITV.

I watched Alien again in the cinema last year for the 4k re-release, I still got sweaty hands during the Brett and Dallas deaths despite watching the film 50+ times.

Todays horror should take note, that's how you build suspense.

I watched Alien far too young. Wouldn't say it ruined childhood for me though, it's up there with my favourite films ever. My daughter is almost the same age I got my mitts on that VHS, I can't imagine how she'd react to it :D

I loved that! Used to make my imagination run wild. It was definitely unnerving though, my younger brother and I once having to call for our parents to come and escort is down from the attic bedroom as we were too frightened to pass a window in case we were spotted by a martian tripod outside.

Great shout. The scene where he dips the shoe omg :(

Me and my young lad (at the time) watched this as i thought it would be a fun movie, completely forgetting about the red eyes and shoe dip scene. Nothing has ever fazed him before, but he came to me that night really upset and scared about those scenes!

Luckily we had seen Back to the Future, so we went through the actor Christopher Lloyd and his many roles and costumes and that seemed to placate him thankfully :)

The only thing I felt was "cheap" about Brett's death was the Jonesy the Cat jump scare, which led to the cat needing to be caught and Brett going after him. The build up in tension with Ripley/Brett tracking "something" would have even more terrifying had it not had that jump scare, which I felt broke-up the tension before having to rebuild it again from scratch with Brett.

Bare with me here, however it's easy to forget now as we know the Alien is full grown when it attacks Brett but try to remember when you first saw the movie. First time hunting the alien, the crew and us, the audience are still expecting something cat/dog size so it stands to reason the noise Jonesy made could have been the Alien.

It's a deliberately crafted false scare to give you a sense of false security before hitting you with the shock that the creature has grown larger than a man. The crew never really feel in danger of death when first looking for the alien, they know it can hurt them sure but in their mind there is no risk to life based on what they know of the alien so far, otherwise they would never have let Brett go alone.

I may be a bit bias though :D

I agree with everything, I just think it would have been better without the jump scare. They could have opened the small locker and Jonesy could have just run off without hissing (and without a loud "mechanical noise" playing) leading to the same situation. Everything about the scene stays the same but without that jump scare.

Watching it again it doesn't feel as bad once you know it's coming but I still don't think it was needed.

I think the only bit that made me jump on that one was when the facehugger jumps out of the egg early on.

I really liked that movie, but there are a few seconds in it that almost ruin the movie, so when the alien is attacking the small lady with short hair (I can't remember the character name sorry) it kind of wraps its tail around her leg, which is a little out of character for the alien, seen through this and the sequel they normally attack very quickly. Ive always wondered if it was suggesting some kind of sexual something.... which if so is a bit wired, not that I'm offended by its mean it's just at maybe a bit cheesy.

It's not something that is repeated in the series either, well apart from the 4th where there was some weird ****, but I personally don't really acknowledge that movie anyway.

Even the 3rd, as terrible as it was, I'll except the existence of.

It's quite a disturbing scene, definitely a sexual element to it, especially with the sounds coming over the speakers as she gets killed.

Maybe the Alien was confused as she was born a man.

I'm a bit of an Alien nerd and the way the alien approaches and deals with Lambert has been discussed a lot over the years. You may like this video:

@MookJong I discovered the Alien Theory channel last year and he has some fascinating insights into the movies, not bad for a guy that started off as a fan theorist just before the launch of Covenant.

Amongst all the doom and gloom I thought it would be fun to discuss things that gave us a fright or disturbed us when we were young.

What’s prompted me is that I stumbled across the below clip from Ren and Stimpy. The show was so damn ****ed up and completely unsuitable for children. What were they thinking!! I can remember watching this show on BBC2 and feeling so awkward and unnerved by it. We are drawn to the things that scare you I guess.

The middle clip in this where Ren gets angry.... Jesus Christ!

There was an episode I remember where Ren is plotting to kill Stimpy in his sleep that was really disturbing but I can’t find a decent clip of it... seemed to be hard to find decent clips of the show on YouTube - probably for the best!! Anyone else have their childhood ruined by that show or any others?

In before the “Threads” :p
