Big loss for Intel. Any architecture he's touched has turned to gold, no doubt Intel's 'Jim Keller' architecture will be absolutely amazing, whenever it's released. I wonder how far this will push Intel ahead, and how many architectures he's laid down plans for.

Wonder where he'll go next?

I'm sure they're well prepared. It'd be rather daft to have a single point of failure, relying on a single person for designs etc. More often than not when top people leave it's at least a joint decision (both parties happy to part ways) or they were pushed.

I'd be surprised of Apple coming up with the own CPU. I think it might be a ploy to negotiate better pricing from suppliers. CPU's are pretty specialised and makes more sense to source them from the companies highly experienced in their design and manufacture. They did do that with their mobile graphics chips tho but I think they've recently struck up a deal with their previous chip designer again (Imagination Technologies).

Apple designs its own chips, using in-house CPU architect Johny Srouji?

Thing is he may have left early because they wouldn't implement the design changes or direction he believed they needed to. Intel is run by the marketing, PRs and execs these days, not by the engineers. Raja is a little but of a misnomer, as he's as much of a 'diva-ey' PR/Exec style bod, as an engineering one.

Pretty sad, I genuinely believe Linus' recent videos where he highlights there are a LOT of GOOD staff at Intel, but the people making the actual decisions are those with the eyes on the money, and bank balance, not the way forward. The last close to decade of milking before Ryzen/AMD has caught them out are pretty telling.

Until we know otherwise, I'm betting on what he's done historically. Every design he's worked on has been a big technological advancement. I'm sure he's done the same for Intel. Very excited to see the future Intel architectures, as we've been stuck on old Skylake for 5 years now!

Intel’s many security vulnerabilities and hardware level problems could very well have been a factor in Keller calling it a day with Intel.

Intel can’t keep ignoring these problems and at some point people will assume Intels CPU’s problems are due to Keller designs.

It's mostly AMD fans that are spreading rumours like this. We simply don't know why he left. Best to assume he's done what he's always done previously for a company - give them a killer design with a few breadcrumbs to future iterations to continue with, then leave for pastures new.

That's basically what Keller does. The number of CPU architects in the world is rather small to say the least. They tend to float around doing consulting for mega bucks, drop their loot and move on to the next big $$ contract. What's interesting to me is how they have to basically be crippled by IP laws. He moved to AMD, dreamed up Ryzen and then went to Intel, where he's not allowed to use anything he learned/created at AMD, and has to start fresh from what Intel already have to work with. I can imagine that presents a lot of unique challenges, and is quite frustrating at times. Imagine knowing you could 'fix' Intel's arch but aren't allowed to mention how because it's something you already used/worked with/discovered at company X a couple of years ago.

Yeah, it will be very interesting to see what he worked on for Intel. We have to remember, Icelake & Alderlake were both complete by the time Jim started work with Intel. They are both massively delayed due to 10nm being broken. Both of these architectures will bring 10-15% IPC, for a combined 20-30% IPC over Skylake (cannonlake). Anything Jim worked on will be on top of this.

Potentially massive performance increases incoming for Intel, about time too!

I still think Sandy Bridge was a much more successful milestone than Nehalem.
Yes, arguably it was less important than it's predecessor architecture (Conroe/Kentsfield) too. Conroe finally wrestled the performance crown back from AMD and then Kentsfield introduced quad core Intel (Q6600 remained a competitive CPU for a long time when overclocked).

It’s a fair conclusion to come to considering the state Intel are in and Kellers very early and abrupt resignation.

I've read some **** in my time on this fourm...but this is right up there.

:D

As much as I e seen him troll. Nothing from AMD is impressive. Ryzen now compete with intel, yes. But as everyone says. It's old tech or refresh tech. So if you put things into perspective, there's nothing impressive in the CPU world at all.

As a side note and what I came into this thread for :)

Can @humbug confirm said claims of said guy leaving for intel ?
