£900,000 to paint a plane?

I actually think it makes sense to smarten up what is a very drab looking plane - and, like it or not, image counts.

(Although it's a bit galling to hear Brexiteers (who screamed about paying Brussels without acknowledging what an incredible return on investment those payments constituted) now trying to tell us the paint job is an investment, and will make us back money in trade).

...But £900,000!?

Apparently it costs £1-200,000 to paint a plane, but this £900,000 includes a refit too.

So £700,000-800,000 (3 x average house prices) is being spent to make sure Johnson has a cushy time aboard.

All aboard the gravy-plane!

Oh and good job bringing Brexit into a thread that has nothing to do with Brexit. Please keep your petty point scoring to Squabblers Corner.

I feel the concept actually does has something to do with Brexit.

If we'd already secured all our trade agreements, then no one would probably care what the plane that carried the PM would look like.

The idea here is that a "wow coloured paint job" may show other countries how good it would be to trade with the UK.

Can't wait to plot the venn diagram of people who think this is a good idea and those who think paying a few quid extra in taxes to feed children is a bad idea.

Yes we should have a plane to allow our representatives to travel abroad to advance trade and relations with other countries, it's a net benefit to the economy. I'd take issue if they were purchasing a new jet for that purpose, but refitting and painting one being currently used which also retains dual use as a tanker seems reasonable.

Wait until you see what Penny Mordaunt requested/suggested....
‘Grotesquely tone-deaf’: Tory minister lambasted for asking Boris Johnson to spend aid money on new royal yachts

Penny Mordaunt accused of ‘delusional desire’ to return to empire, after requesting overseas development cash for two luxury vessels

If it was Corbyn or Starmer as PM and doing this, Garnett wouldn’t say a word. It’s literally just because it’s Boris.
That's about as believable as unicorns. Plus Dolph would have picked up the slack. So you agree with the refit and paint job?

Interesting to note the correlation between people who are ok with this, but think feeding kids during a pandemic is a terrible thing to do.

Boris and co know exactly who supports them and seeing a union jack on a plane will be a hit with them, again all they (literally) care about is how they look.

We need a venn diagram tbh.

Also 900k to refit and repaint a plane that size is about right, this isn’t anything unusual tbh. BBC wanting everyone to whinge about the gov again.

I don’t care mate, I really couldn’t give a monkeys if they spend £900k on a plane.
Fair enough. It just seems that you previously cheered Johnson on spending priorities. So you accuse someone of bias but seemingly might doing that very thing yourself?
He’s slashing budgets from non priority departments so he can invest the money into our priorities like the NHS, Police and equality amongst regions.
Admittedly £900k isn't a lot in the grand scale of things but it's far from a top priority and is in bad taste considering the current situation.

Here's the most pro-Brexit rag, the Express, referencing Boris's own claim to need a "Brexit Jet".

..But yeah, "Don't remind us about our calamitous mistake!"

I’d say it’s actually quite important with the amount of trade deals he’s going to need to dash around doing.

What they don't explain is that aircraft are routinely repainted every 5-10 years. The maintenance of military aircraft is extremely expensive, and this is no exception. I feel many people are simply seeing "Boris spends £££££££ on XYZ", look/think no deeper and become outraged. It's a shame because journalists could have done some research and explained this in their articles, but it wouldn't have received the same amount of clicks and shares so they didn't, and now individuals who have otherwise relatively sound judgement have had the wool pulled over their eyes.
