Until you've got the epic/legendary gear, it's not really that worthwhile spending too much time on a lot of it. Some of the legendary gear (and to a degree epic) can completely make a build insane. There's stuff for a grenadier scout, that combined with skills, turns them from powerful, to insane. And it's just fun playing with insane builds.

Any recommendations on combinations and best squads to use?

I started this just got to the Brumak fight tbh it's a **** take, attempted it four times so far and Brumak just knocks me down so much.

Tried keeping 2 members at each side but he never moved from right side so am always losing two of em early on.

The difficulty spike from the normal missions to that one is seriously op imo

I expect boss fights to be harder but it feels more like it's just unbalanced.

Doesn't help I think the sniper is mostly sack of turd

What difficulty are you on? I played on one below insane, and didn't have too much trouble. Give the brumak a sacrifice (Sid is usually good), but mostly try and stay out of his way. It was close if I recall, but fun. If playing insane I guess it may be different. Better to lose a whole turn moving, than lose a character, but again, insane doesn't have Downed and lots more damage, so if that's what you're doing, I can't really help.

Sniper early is a tough one, sniper at level 6+ is an insane beast, especially if there's high ground.

I loved the scout grenadier build. With UIR armour, you can get grenades every turn, that do massive damage and have a huge range, with the right skills, you can even get multiple grenades a turn. Combine that with empower and teamwork, and it's free action points for your support.

I usually went vanguard, support, sniper, scout. Vanguard more for specialist moments of being able to run across the map with the bayonette charge every now and then, but others have builds that are very effective (using breach I think). Snipers start off quite weak, but as they get chainshot level 2, fast reload 2, lock and load, run and gun, they can one shot kill a lot of enemies using a crit build, and generate huge amounts of AP, especially with certain bits of gear that help cooldown abilities.

Pretty much mirrored what your doing to an extent, this game put me in the mood to buy XCOM 2 and once Gears is done moving onto that.

I suck at tactic games tbf but it's only on intermediate.

Up to now I haven't had any issues, I will go back to it but each thing Ive tried has ended in death for me

It's a while ago for me now. Think I used sniper to damage tanks, then used whoever was on the other side to turn it back around, then snipe again, then turn again etc. Making sure you worry about distance. His machine gun attack actually seemed really weak if I recall, so no point in bothering in focusing the guns. Save grenades for closing emergence holes, you can also, if possible, place the grenade on the emergence hole before it opens, to prevent any enemies coming out. It may seem like a lot of moves, but it's less moves than you'd use to actually kill whatever comes out, so it still makes sense if doable.

That's the first time I really struggled in the game, and it was because I got there with a wounded team who didn't have great damage output (because I took the Cole train and had 3 soldiers with lancers)

You need a minigunner as the 4th soldier, plain and simple.

Also make sure you get to that fight with everyone at full health. If they've been downed in the battle to get there, then you will struggle like hell.

And make sure your entire squad has frag grenades not stim grenades. You can place your soldiers near where the emergence holes open (they always open in the same place) and destroy them before they open.

I didn't have a machine gunner, had a scout. Where it's a large target, even the shotgun rarely misses at range. Machine gunner does have advantages though, especially with certain skills.

Stim grenades are pretty useless in my mind, I've tended to find that a frag grenade stops you taking damage in the first place, vs a stim to repair a little.

For those experiencing a crash at the beginning with the latest AMD driver loaded, reload the game and hit escape at the title screen on first game load fixed all my woes.

For me, after that initial time, there is no need to hit escape again when loading the game up.

For those interested in playing the first two missions in this game are gash. don't judge the game on what happens there as they are really just a prologue or training missions.

You are in for one wild ride, just make sure you play Xcom 2 with War of the Chosen loaded. Don't play it without that DLC. One of the best games ever produced.

Oh really... Okay, waiting for the Steam Summer sales that's around the corner and will consider taking the plunge, thanks for the advice!

Into the meat of ACT2 now, the start of each of the first two acts is a slow grind but the fun really starts once you get your team to tier 5/level 5.

I won't pass final judgement on the game until i have completed it.

Act 2 was definitely the most fun. Enough skills to do some genuinely interesting/fun/insane things, but not yet at the point where it feels like you've already done harder missions than the story ones in 3.

If you have it on steam, check out some of the mods, they look like they can make it much more fun (more enemies basically, making it tactically harder).

Cool, I will check the mods out once i am done with the campaign.

The base game is no XCOM, it feels more like a $30 DLC looking for a $60 game.

The campaign is very uneven on the higher difficulty settings, you grind the missions fine enough and then get hit with an extremely difficult boss fight with scam mechanics designed to get you killed.

We had this given to us in the Division 2 Darpa labs boss fight with the mortars, its cheap and i am having problems getting my head around why the do these things but it seems designed to slow you down unnecessarily.

Compounded to this there are all sorts of bugs and glitches going on and other minor annoyances.

Meh!

Didn't hit any bugs or glitches.

I really enjoyed the mechanics and skills. The boss fights were underwhelming (played on the level under insane, insane was too much). I wouldn't want xcom level of strategy layer, but I'd love a base, map, and have the missiosn actually at locations, rescues, gear recovery, sabotage etc. Send out multiple teams as time ticks on.
