Hi
My boy wanted a PC to play Fortnite, so i dusted off my old PC from the loft.
It has x58, 4/8c Xeon, 6GB, SSD and Radeon HD 5850. It still works ok apart from the gpu, so what 2nd hand card should i be looking for to give him a reasonable fortnite framerate at 1080p?

I really don't want to spend any money - as it's probably a fad as we'll be getting PS5 at the end of year.

cheers

If you want to keep costs down and just Fortnite only, maybe something like a used Nvidia 970? Think they go for like £70-80 on the auction site, or ask in the MM

Not sure if the CPU is any good for it though, it's a 12 year old rig that going by the X58 board.

Would look to pick up a used rx 570 for under £100 and maybe grab a Xeon X5650 6 core for under a tenner.

Whats the Mobo?

Under £40 sound better! I'm flogging a dead horse here, i've yet to test how the current HD 5850 plays, but seeing as the last driver was in 2015, I'm not holding much hope.

The cheapest RX 570/580, GTX960/970 you can find used.

Going lower I just sold a GTX770 for £30 that I tested by playing Fortnite on med at 1080p at well above 60fps. (closer to 100 at times)
Also recently gave away an older HD7870XT to be paired with an old AMD FX8350 cpu that was playing Fortnite very well at 1440x900. (Medium-ish tweaked settings and well above 60 fps).

I tested the old HD5850 and it was ticking along at about 40fps at low. It was good enough for him to get practicing with the mouse and keyboard. Meanwhile, I’ll keep my eyes out for a sub £50 bargain.
Cheers
