Re-gap the compressor clutch on the FN2 today as it's not working.

Most difficult bit was getting to the compressor bolts so that I can swing it away from the chassis and actually get to the pulley. I wouldn't know what I would have done without the electric ratchet.

As there's no way of getting a proper compressor clutch holding tool in there, I improvised with an angle grinder blade changing tool. It worked and the nut wizzed straight off with the impact gun. The shim in there is 0.4mm and the gap is around 1mm.

So in theory, removing the shim will give me the right gap (0.35-0.65mm). Torqued up and checked the 0.35mm feeler gauge will go in all round and it did:

I actually drove it!. I’ve been off work shielding since late March and I’ve not really left the house, been walking to the shops if I needed to go.

On another note it flashed up needing a service, might have to do it this year. Skipped last year as I was planning to get a new one but things have changed so will probably keep it for another year.

Cleaned and waterproofed the roof yesterday. Today it was wash, clay, polish and wax.

The poor old girl is starting to show her age but still shines up ok from a distance.

Found a playful M2 on the back roads (67 plate, black with black wheels). Nice exhaust note, but mine drowned it out a bit! Sounded like a DCT as the downshifts were rapid, made my manual gear change skills look very pedestrian! I was expecting it to leave me in the dust, and it’s difficult to know how hard they were really pushing (some tyre squeal makes me think quite hard), but it wasn’t difficult to close the gap at any point. Not bad for 15 years old!

I think I’m getting more used to just how much rear traction the 997 has and how it slingshots out of corners (in the dry!). Very satisfying indeed! A bit ridiculous that you only need to use first and second gear to use all the rev range before exceeding the speed limit. I guess it’s a good thing that the engine makes all its power at the top end.

Traffic in front of me stopped, I stopped, the Micra behind me didn’t.

Insurance assessor who arrived on the scene said he didn’t think my car would be written off, which seems amazing as it’s worth about 50p and needs a new bumper, boot and crash bar, and what looks like the fuel tank is all bent. Suits me if they do repair it as I’ve had it ages and it costs me nothing, and I really don’t fancy going through the whole argument of how much they’re going to pay me for the car. Should have a definitive answer tomorrow, I’m sure you’re all on tenterhooks to find out whether such a beautiful, rare car will live again :p

Dropped the Volvo off at yet another local garage that reviews 'very well' on Monday morning to have some leaking O rings that go to the heater matrix replaced.

I showed them this picture I had taken under the footwell, asked them to replace both O rings and clamps with gen Volvo ones as aftermarket ones leak, they said no problem and took the car.

Come 4pm I called asking if the car was done, he replied saying they've tried everywhere and can't get hold of the O rings and clamps, so I offered to have a look myself to help them out. Called my local Volvo, 5 minutes on the phone and £20 later the parts were on their way to them....Not that hard is it

Picked car up this morning and asked how it went, as it's meant to be a bit fiddly, he said it was fine, leaked a bit first time so they had to redo it and that it was fine now, fair enough, I paid and took the car home.

Within 10 minutes of driving it home I got a coolant smell through the air vents again, pulled over and took this, it was wet with coolant too.

Looks like their fix is just to bodge it terribly with silicone, they've only done one side too, which I'm thankful for actually, if that's what they're gonna do.

What do I do now? Give it back to them to no doubt mess it up more or cut losses and try find another 'decent' garage?

Does anyone around the Southampton area know any good garages? I've tried 6 now since I moved here, including a Volvo 'specialist' who thought a broken shock absorber was the cause of a 'clunk' when it was an ARB bush :(

Jeez, that's a bodge and a half!
I'd probably be asking them for a full refund for that travesty, then just write off the £20 on parts as it may be more trouble than it's worth to get that back too..

I would tell them to fix the mess they have made to a standard you are happy with and then repair it properly in the manner you specifically requested, free of charge, or threaten action against them.

Might seem a bit guns blazing, but that would royally pee me off. Not to mention the fact that if beads of silicone end up inside the pipe then it could cause damage elsewhere.

If they refuse and/or make life difficult, time to name and shame and muddy their name on Trustpilot / Google reviews / etc...
