Hi all, I made a PC back in 2013 for my brother which he has now passed onto his kids. Its basic spec was as below.

AMD A8-5600K Black Edition 3.60GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor
Gigabyte F2A85X-D3H AMD A85X Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 ATX Motherboard
Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17000C11 2133MHz Dual CHannel Kit
Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gbs 64MB Cache - OEM (S (HD-257-SE)
Corsair Builder Series CX 430w Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020058-UK)

Currently it shuts of randomly after 10 mins or so usage so i suspect its the PSU that needs changing. I want to inject a bit of life into and upgrade it to windows 10 at the same time

So i need a new PSU, SSD, cheap graphics card and possibly another 8GB of RAM - so it can be used for work and some video creation (basic - for youtube videos etc). No gaming at all.

Any suggestions for all the above in about £200-£300?

I guess the PSU is critical as of right now and the other bits can be ordered in the next few weeks

thanks in advance.

That cheap capacitors PSU has definitely exceeded designed usage life for active use PC.
Bitfenix Formula would be good for basic non-gaming PC.

Don't see sense in smaller than quarter TB SSD, because prices don't drop in relation with capacity.
Those start from £30

Half TB drives start from £50.

While adding memory could be usefull for working with video, that CPU is by todays standards dog slow and neither could bought additional memory be reused in any later more modern built.

Cheapest graphics cards start from £45, but video creation might be able to use GPU for faster working depending on used software.

Hi so I tried a new pau and although the problem seems to have improved it is randomly cutting out. So I think it may be a motherboard issue.

in that case will need a new motherboard, CPU and RAM. I have already got the SSD and GFX card.

any recommendations? I have no idea on the latest AMD / intel tech. It’s not for gaming just home work use and the odd bit of video editing to be done / made.

This is pretty good base to start with;
My basket at Overclockers UK:

Thanks for the reply Biz. Is Ryzen the way to go currently ? I last built my PC about 6 years ago ( a Cor i5) so have no idea why the Ryzen architecture is good. Im assuming then i will not need a gfx card then using this setup? i did buy a Geforce GT 710 as a cheap gfx card - am i better off keeping it or using the onboard graphics?

Yeah Ryzen is really good these days for both budget builds and high end. The onboard graphics is better than the 710.

Thats good to hear re onboard gfx, i will look at the 3200G seems decent bang for buck.

is there any reason to get this motherboard over say a cheaper B450 chipset board ?

And regarding SSD - i had already got the WD green linked above for 30 quid - is it worth spending a little extra getting an M2 NVMe SSD ?

No real reason, you can definitely save 20/30 for a slightly cheaper one. For majority of use cases and people, you won't notice going from a WD Green SSD to an NVME.
