I hope you haven't been driving around high on recreational stuff, I can understand slipping up with something you've been prescribed to an extent but I absolutely abhor people who drive while intoxicated.

It's date of the offence, or technically, day after the date of the offence. Time is computed from the day after the day on which the offence was committed and ends at midnight of the day sixth months later. That's the point where it needs to "be laid before the court". It's all detailed in Section 127 of the Magistrates' Courts Act 1980.
