That's how our place does it.
Probably not breaking any laws, as the number of pedantic jobsworths we have who 'know their rights' would definitely have kicked off by now, not to mention the union lot who are ever-ready to pounce on the slightest slight against the workers...

This is the thing though i think it is against the law

Daily rest
Workers have the right to 11 hours rest between working days, eg if they finish work at 8pm, they shouldn’t start work again until 7am the next day.

I am on Standby at work, it is in the electricity supply industry.
We are on a rota and can be on weekdays and weekends and this is a 24 hour shift regardless of being at work for a full day.
Basically you get 8 hours uninterrupted sleep BUT there is some amendments to that rule..

. Called out straight from work until after midnight - 11 hours sleep
. Working until 3am or after with 6 Hours worked - day off
. Called out after 4am - no rest time, expected to work a normal days shift following
. If this is a Friday-Sunday standby then any next day sleep time you get back as lieu (holiday)

So, if you are called out at 9pm and work until 3am -day off
If you get called out straight from work and work until 1am - 11 hours rest

Its a bit complicated and quite a new set up. There was a lot of confusion at the beginning!!
