Best Card for 1080p?

Ive been following the RTX 3070 or RX6800 news and I was set on picking up one of them.

However I only have a 1080p monitor (AOC 24G2U) and Ive no plans to change it any time soon. Are these cards overkill for a 1080p setup? If so, what is a better choice?

Im currently building my first PC with this spec:

  • AMD Ryzen 5000 (undecided which one right now)
  • 32GB Ram
  • B550M board
  • WD 1Tb M.2
  • HHD 10Tb

I use my PC for a mix of gaming and photo editing.

Cool.

I think the 6800 does make more sense. If it was a few months away maybe I'd get a 3070. Just not looking forward to the struggle of getting a 5000 and 6800.

I definitely don't think it's worth spending that much for 1080p unless you really want 240Hz or something like that.

A 2060, 56/5700xt or at most a 2070 should be more than enough for 1080p, just look up benchmarks for the games you play.

But it’s totally worth it with the fact that any game comes out in the next couple of years the 3070 or 6800xt will munch them up and give him the leg room for higher res if he so wishes

This is a 144hz monitor, to save anyone else having to go look it up.

Yeah, those new cards you list are overkill. Edit: Change of mind. My 1080ti maxes out at 2K ultrawide 60hz, similar pixels per second (I know architectures don't quite work as nicely as that).

So it depends on how much spare headroom you want in a card. Whether you don't mind it dropping below 144 sometimes. Kowe above also has it right, in that if you are into photo editing a new higher res monitor would be the priority over the card?

My 290x lightning is still smashing games at 1080p. Them new cards shouldn't even put on a sweat. Personally I'd save some money and get an older card.

A 2070 or 5700xt will also definitely manage anything coming out in the next few years at 1080p though? And they already said they're not planning on upgrading any time soon, so why not just upgrade GPU in a few years when they'll be even cheaper if need be?

I have a 2070 and game at 1080p I can play warzone with high textures and low everything else just to manage to get in the 140s for my monitors refresh.

if I try to play dayz on everything max I get latency when I’m moving my mouse which is only stopped when I step the graphics down a notch.

I can guarantee that when next gen consoles are out and games are pushing more options the 2070 will not be a good card to last a couple of years.
This is paired with a 9700k 16gb ram.

I am looking to upgrade to a 3080 or amd equivalent so I can have headroom when I go up to 1440p

my point is why not just get a new amd card when they are out instead of wasting money on older cards that aren’t going to offer the performance when the next gen games kick in and keep frames at a comfortable level. Cos let’s be honest no one games on a pc to game at 30fps 60fps is the bare minimum at all times at least.

And my point is that why spend an extra £300 now for almost no benefit? Maybe in a couple years OP'll need something more powerful, and in a couple years they'll be able to grab something like a 3070 or 6800 for way cheaper. What if there ends up being a similar performance increase from rtx 3000 to 4000 as there was from 2-3?

Overspending now unless you have plans to upgrade resolution or refresh rate soon (i.e next 6-12 months tops) is completely pointless.

I run 1080p due to eyestrain.

Whilst I am a big fan of the 5700XT and the 2070S (i have run both against my 1080ti HOF, i kept the 5700xt as i had a waterblock) I think either the 3070 or the 6800 will be a worthwhile purchase for 1080p over any of these cards. I had a great experience in most games but there were some edge cases where the fps would dip below 60 and i think the 3070/6800 solve that nicely.

Id avoid them new cards there meant for 4k 60fps min. Grab say a 1660 super or 5600xt maybe at a push a 2060 or 5700. If used a 1080 maybe?

After playing at 1080p @144fps I would personally never consider dropping frame rate for resolution.

There are so many variables to what is the best 1080p card.

If you value high FPS (a constant 144fps), you're looking at at least a 5700XT/2070 Super depending on the games you play.

If you play older games that aren't as graphically intensive, but still require those high frames, consider lower tier cards, Vega 56+64/1070/2060.

Hold on, you want high frames in older games but don't mind playing at the lowest settings? An rx580 will see you good.

You only have a 60hz monitor? Everything changes.

You have a 144hz monitor but only play football manager. Everything changes.

A comprehensive breakdown of your requirements and preferences is needed othwerwise to cover all bases the best 1080p card is the 6900XT.

If you cant wait for the 6700xt from amd (early next year) , the 6800 makes most sense with a zen3
