They aren't that special. I'd be amazed if they became collectible.

It's not like the new Z4 is a flop or anything. It's got the brilliant B58 engine, an LSD and decent looks with up to date tech.

Lots of cars have increased in value this year and thats mainly because there was increased demand for second hand cars as people tried to avoid public transport. New car sales were significantly down in 2020 which also reduced used car supply.

35is is an E89, not the new G29

Mass production cars don't become collectible if the newer car is better in every way.

They sort of do. Try paying less for an 1996 E34 525i Sport than a 2001 E39 530i Sport even though the newer car is better in every way. Or less than the E34 for an E28...

Or as a more extreme example, is there anyone who doesn't genuinely believe that as mass produced cars go, the Mk1 Focus was better than the Mk2 Escort? You could probably buy every Mk1 Focus on Autotrader for less than a Mk2 Escort now.

What does or doesn't become collectible has little to do with how good the car itself is and everything to do with how desirable they are versus how many are left - and cars are often desirable for irrational rather than rational reasons.

That said I don't think the Z4 35iS is particularly special or collectible. It's a great car, but the fact there are 'only 400' isn't really relevant as its just a trim level of a more popular model. There were only 250 manual E39 530i's but they're all still worthless today :D

Yeh but those are classics. We both know the E89 Z4 isn't that. Also very few cars fall into that bucket. Probably <1% of all models.

The last generation Z4 isn't appreciating now like a classic. It's just misleading information the person has been given. Let me know when it becomes more expensive than the new model. Almost definitely never.

See it across the internet, owners of particular cars like to think they are on to an appreciating vehicle.

Question regarding the 35is Z4, I believe there are less than 400 on UK roads, is this going to become a “collectible” or worth anything in the future? Some comments I’ve read on the Z4 forum seem to suggest their value has gone up a bit this year.
Debating what to do with mine, sell on or keep/store/sorn etc over winters. It’s an additional car so I don’t need it, but do like it, but running out of space

The value will have increased over the last year but as will the value of most 'fun' petrol engined cars. There's a lot of people who's commute has dropped drastically with no impending return so demand for exactly your type of vehicle went up. However I would doubt it was specific to the fact it's a Z4 with only 400 remaining.

They are now, yes. But they were once just old cars and before that nice cars and before that brand new mass produced and generic cars.

It is very difficult to predict which cars of today will go on to be collectible tomorrow. I mean good though it was did anyone expect the Saxo VTS wouldn't just fade away at banger money?

The 35iS isn’t just a trim level, it has a unique spec of engine that was taken from 1M coupe. Just a shame it was given an M badge.

It's the other way round. There is nothing unique about it's engine, its the same N54 used across the BMW range and available in exactly the same state of tune in the US market 335iS.

The engine for the 1M was taken from the 35iS, which came out first.

I think the VTS and 106 GTI were always going to be classics.

It’s a similar recipe to the 205 GTI - relatively low volume, fun and light hatch, lots crashed, ruined with mods etc.

As a fellow owner I wish I could tell you with a straight face that it’s going to do what the previous top of the range Z4 did and appreciate, but I don’t think I can.

It’s not just a trim level, it’s got an extra spicey tune on the engine and overboost and things like that, but it is just that, it’s not a proper M car with different suspension etc. I think BMW could have just about justified calling it a Z4 M35iS but they didn’t have non M M cars back then and I don’t think like the m340i or whatever.

I wish they had done because I think then the value would be higher because it’s a great car, and I didn't realise there are so few. If it does appreciate or hold it’s value that’s great news for me.

Thanks for your thoughts, appreciate it was crystal ball question, was interested in peoples views. Think I will keep it for a while after the GRY arrives, not rush to sell, see how it all pans out. May then SORN it for winter.

It will if you take the listed prices at face value. Unless something has drastically changed in the past year I've never paid a Skoda dealer more than £120 for a basic oil service.

Hence the word 'try'. The last big change was Jan 2020, as per your own thread on Briskoda :p, when they removed the 'oil change only' for £99 and made the 'oil and inspection service' the lowest available option at £179
