They might do but with the push to electic they're not going to be around forever. That said I'd prefer a manual as dct just doesn't do it for me.Manuals are still better in many ways. Also a lot of cheaper (especially eco) cars have awful auto boxes.
Yes considered those. My wife really likes them. But we would get less car for the money, reliability seems questionable on older models, and being BMW the cost of service and repair is probably higher?Considered a Mini instead? Clubman if you want something a bit larger and still in budget. Love mine.

Probably not old enough for big problems to pop up yet
What 'big problems' would you expect to suddenly find with a car that's been fine for 4 years? The only thing I can think of to consider is that the 1.5 BMW/Mini petrol engine has had a recall to deal with excessive crankshaft wear. In terms of reliability surveys, the Clubman scores well.
It took longer than that for RX-8s to start blowing up.
It took longer than that for RX-8s to start blowing up. The older Minis have quite a list of known issues and they didn't all appear that quickly.
Just saying it's a BMW, don't expect top reliability

When looking at long term reliability they don't come out so well...
Transmission, clutch and timing chains seem to be weak spots. About the worst weak spots you can have.
