They need to really just split the internet, kiddy version for children and the permanently offended censorious types and an adult internet like it was 20 years ago (before the big tech monopolies took over) for everyone else.

Funny how people are prepared to do this for Youtube - to view, in some cases, just "potentially offensive videos" - but there was uproar when people were going to be asked to do it to view porn.

Not really, it's consistent with the idiotic but widespread view of "I'm happy to give up my privacy because I have nothing to hide", in the case of porn they want to hide it.

People should be protective of their right to privacy whether they have something to hide or not, it's fair to say that it's currently coming under assault though by both governments and corporations.

i don't know what they use to determine the age verification need.l i got stopped from watching one video i've watched before a good few months back. the guy has several other vids on his channel but they don't ask me to verify.

There is the possibility if an account is old enough they may either skip it or at least put it last in the order, logic dictates a 20 year old account is an adult. However youtube is only 16 years old, so old accounts will still be within an 18 year period.

As far as I know, it's a mixture of reporting from users and an algorithm that doesn't work all that well. Which is understandable - how could a computer program reliably calculate whether or not a video meets the imprecisely defined requirements for age verification on Youtube?

Find it hilarious how many ads i've been getting for the new resident evil (y'know, that famously family oriented series that's fun for kids of all ages) whilst also occasionally tripping an age verification for some vids.

Made me laugh awhile back when YT started ghosting, deleting or even suspending users for content with firearms and some other stuff which apparently was responsible for destroying lives and families while on the other hand quite happy to show me a dozen ads for gambling sites a day...

if your gmail and youtube account are the same? I don't get any of this stuff
Mine are both the same . I got told I had to make my videos for adult only ... Chickens wandering around my garden and no swearing, they even started turning off my comments section so none of my friends can chat on there to me . I have had both accounts fir many years . . I cannot access my own videos now from Google and there are many videos it keeps asking for age verification no currant licence and no passport so really miffed .
A couple of years off 60 and being treated like a kindergarten infant .

age verification is a load of crap even documentaries are getting it..

I'ma assume it's a highly professionally made informative video like their previous video I just watched on mushrooms.

gotta be over 18 to watch someone growing cannabis? seriously? oh oh oh but wait it's fine when it's a video from a big pharma company growing cannabis right..
why don't get they age verification?

I bet I could find news reports showing people smoking crack and heating heroin on a spoon that aren't 18+ and loads of violent news reports.

my google account must be older than 18 years too
I think my Google account must be nearly that old too . I can't watch my own chicken videos in my garden through Google now because they decided not for children . They are bantam chickens scratching up ground going cluck cluck cluck and eating worms not sure they will let me have them back either to try and uplaod somewhere else

I remember when I first used the internet and everything was newgrounds / rottendotcom / shock content.

How much I miss it :(

I loved back in the day how there were hardly any restrictions. A world wide web with practically no limits. Now it's endless obstacles, restrictions, paywalls, region locks, subscription tiers. You name it, there will be something to hinder and restrict your path.

Today it's feeling like it is no longer becoming a world wide web. Only in name.

Yep, the internet was much better before the sheep found it and it became fashionable :/

It was never created for advertising and corporate BS. The infrastructure and code it's built on is intentionally designed to prevent it being controlled. I'm hoping before Tim Berners-Lee etc. dies, they update it to **** them all over :D

I've been getting occasional notifications from Google on my (Android) phone to add my DOB to my account. It says 'This information is needed to comply with the law'. I haven't even had trouble accessing any YT vids or similar so not sure what they're on about, but it's pretty sly wording by them because there's no way that there's a law that says that Google needs my DOB. Basically the same kind of wording that scammers would use to pressure someone into giving away their personal information. I've ignored it thus far anyway and nothing's happened.
