I had a matrox card used for duel display but was rubbish for gaming.
The G400 was a good gaming card for the time... provided you didn't ask it to run anything using OpenGL. Of course, then came the Parhelia disaster and that was the end of another player in the GPU market (gaming-wise anyway, I think Matrox are still around making more basic display adapters).

There were many programmers that raved about those Matrox cards in their 2D quality and driver performance back then.

Nvidia and ATi back then had abysmal 2D drivers.
