Ubuntu Folder Quotas.... is this actually possible?

I've got an Ubuntu Server that I've set up a folder for Time Machine backups to run on our two Macbooks.

This works flawlessly, however I want to set a limit on how big that folder can grow to. Time machine on the macbooks will then manage culling old backups.

I've had a bit of a read online, and people seem to think this is not a good thing to do on Linux. Can someone explain in plain english why, and what would be a better solution?

Happy to do something 'Simple' like use GParted to resize the partitions on the storage drives that the folder is on and then control it that way, but if there is a different way to do it, I'm interested....
