Hi all :)
Looking to put together a part system to replace a friends lga1150 ddr3 socket board which is playing up.
Obvs can't get a new board replacement so will be using a new cpu/mobo/ram.

looking at only ATX boards.
I plan to use 3200 mhz ram, so assume a B460 is a no go, cpu overclocking won't be happening, but would like something that has good vrm cooling.

I was looking at the Gigabyte B560 HD3, anyone have any better alternatives without going much more in price than that board, or any reasons not to use that board ?

I did a build at Christmas for a family member using a 10400f and a MSI Mortar B460M Wifi. Main reason for even picking this board was for the games and cashback it came with at the time. It was such a great board I picked up the AMD equivalent B550M Mortar for my Ryzen 5800x. I'm really surprised to find out that B560 will let you go above the 2666mhz that was previously the highest on the 10400f on B460. Having a look around it doesn't seem like there really anything that would suit you.

How long does he plan on keeping said system for? I'd be saving/ putting a bit extra to have Type C support etc. That Gigabyte board has LPT and COM ports on it which I found a bit strange, and looking at some videos on YouTube seems to downclock quite regularly. https://youtu.be/HkiTA0XvXUM?t=459 - I'd stay away tbh!

The VRMs/VRM cooling is less of an issue on a 10400, because it's relatively low power, but the video linked above seems to be pretty clear which boards are the toasty ones.

Thanks gents, may need to push the budget a little and go for the bazooka b560m and matx !
USB C isnt a priority.
I am not 100% sure, but i believe the 560 boards allow running 3200 memory with a 10400, thats why I was looking at those.
The crucial website however, says its 3200 part I was looking at getting is 100% compatible with the B460 mortar, presumably it only runs 2666 though ?

B560 will allow you to rum memory faster than 2666mhz which is locked on the b460 .

If your friend don't need the onboard graphics then the 11400F is a good choice and is a decent bump over the 10400 in gaming and multithreaded performance and PCIe gen 4.0 adds a bit of futureproofing.

It can run up to 2933 (but not with an i5), so the 3200 would almost be there, I think they only mean it will work though, not that it will run at 3200. There's little sense in buying 2666 unless it's extremely cheap.

Thank you gents, yes it seems like intel dropped the ball a bit here.
If AMD had good options in this price range they would clean up it seems.
Thankfully for my scenario I can get away with a bazooka b560 as my friend wont upgrade anything until it stops working, so it will all be obsolete by then.
The 10400f shouldn't provide any problems, even with power limits removed for best performance if required.
