My current spec is:

Mobo: Asus H310M-K
CPU: i5-8500
GPU: RTX 2080
PSU: Cooler Master MasterWatt Lite 600W

I’ve been struggling lately with some games being CPU bottlenecked so I’m looking to upgrade my CPU. I was intending to buy the best LGA1511 compatible CPU and throw it in my system along with a new PSU. After a bit of research it would seem my MOBO is a little bit **** and would limit some CPUs.

I’m wondering what the best bang-for-buck upgrade would be for my system without having to replace the MOBO.

Alternatively, is there an option with AMD where it would be worthwhile replacing both the MOBO, CPU and cooler?

Thanks I’m advance!

Your already on a 6 core cpu moving to a 9600k another 6 core cpu would give you between 10 to 15 % perfirmance boost . The 9700k 8 core would be a good option and can be had for £250, not sure used prices but cheaper.

£250 puts you in the realms of a 11400f and a b560 motherboard , what ram speed do you have and budget ?

16GB DDR4 2400.

Budget, unsure. Happy to spend up to £3-400 if I’m getting good returns in performance.
The newer processor can use faster ram 3600mhz is,the sweet spot but you could still reuse the 2400 mhz.

11400f £150 is the value king but on pre order everywhere the 11400 can be had for £170 and the MSI B560M PRO-VDH WIFI for £99 would be a solid upgrade. If you want to get 3600mhz ram that around another £70 but dont forget you can sell your old stuff to recoup somw money.

What resoloution you gaming at ?

I was originally thinking of sticking an i9 9900 but read that my mobo would probably overheat and I wouldn’t get full performance out of it. Have you any suggestions on which i7s/i9s would be a good fit for my system?

Thanks for this. Would my PSU be capable of supporting this with a 2080?

It’s a waste of money. Sticking with the 8500 would be a better option.
OP was asking what the best bang for buck upgrade is and it's the 8700, not saying it's the fastest option but spending over double the price on a 5600X, board and ram won't net double the performance infact it will only be about 10% faster at 1080p and about 3% faster at 1440P with a midrange card like the vanilla 2080.

The bast bang for buck is to sit tight. I’m not sure what you mean by 10% faster. Explain.

An i5-8500 is pushing it in that board. H310 is for i3 office builds. It’s really basic even compared to B360.

But it’s only going to be 10% faster according to you.
It will probably be around 15% faster with OPs current GPU but those 10 cores and Windows 11 optimisation mean it will last a long time without needing to upgrade again.
