Expanding from 16 GB to 32 GB of RAM on X570

Hi guys,

I currently have 16 GB of Crucial Ballistix Sport LT BLS2K8G4D32AESCK 3200 MHz, DDR4, DRAM, CL16. I would like to expand to 32 GB but that kit is no longer available. I am on Aorus X570 AORUS ELITE mobo.

So what is the best option, performance wise (don't mind spending more on a better option):

• Buy a "similar" one like this one: Crucial Ballistix BL2K8G32C16U4W 3200 MHz, DDR4, DRAM, Desktop Gaming Memory Kit, 16GB (8GB x2), CL16
  
  
• Buy some other 2x8 kit altogether and add to my setup
  
  
• Buy some other kit completely in a 2 x 16 setup and get rid of my existing RAM
  

Any recommendations please?

3200MHz should be easy to achieve for memory controller of modern Ryzens and possible even if all four DIMMs aren't precisely identical.
But would definitely want as similar DRAM chips as possible, meaning Microns. (Crucial's parent company)

Four DIMMs would give two DIMMs and hence per rank giving command interleaving, which would boost CPU limited gaming performance.
(basically comparable to 3600 MHz single rank)

Dual rank would be harder to get with 16 GB DIMMs, most of which are nowadays single ranks, because 16 Gbit capacity DDR4 chips being standard commodity.
Only old Samsung b-die is limited to 8 Gbit needing 16 chips for 16 GB DIMM.

This is the option I'd go with as both kits will likely be micron and almost certainly have the same rank due to being 8gb dimms.

If your gaming at 1080p with a high end GPU and want the best performance kit then a dual rank Samsung B-die 3600mhz 32gb is the best option but will set you back 200 quid.

I can't say that I understood all of that but are you saying another set of 2x8 would be the way to go?

quite interesting. He ended up putting 4 completely different makes/speed/timings in his rig and worked fine.

Couple of options

1) try and get another set of 2x8gb same ram, then have 4 dimm slots full. this will give a performance boost too...(seen your ram for £65 online). This will be cheapest option my guess

2)32gb (2*16gb) is now cheaper per gb than the 8gb ram sticks now. You can sell your ram on auction site and buy 2x16gb( most 16gb ram s/b dual rank as opposed to 8gb ram which is generally single rank)...so just replace your your ram sticks. If going that route sweet spot for price is 3600Mhz, then try and get some with tight timings, so C16 over C18. I've seen crucial Ballistix 2x16gb 3600C16 rgb for £162, non rgb for £148. 3600C18 can be had for cheaper, seen corsair vengeance pro rgb fc3600C18 for£140

prices for ram have dropped quite a bit in the last few months so worth shopping around

if you want the best, then Sammy b-die would be your option as best for overclocking. OCuk have it below. No rgb or anything, you're buying performance. They did have it at £179 for awhile. If youwant that woth giving them a ring, they may drop it again for you, esp. as other ram getting cheaper

As side note, anyone think price drop for ram happening with the advent of new cpu/mobo etc coming out and the intro of ddr5? I've been following prices since Jun when I bought my kit, and know it was extortionate at one point, but when I bought, people were saying it was back to normal prices, but prices have kept dropping​

For that motherboard the best option would be 4X8GB single rank between 3600 and 4000 rated depending on the CPU you have.

Just had a check and according to review it states following.

On the X570 AORUS MASTER, GIGABYTE has chosen what appears to be a daisy chain memory topology. What that means in practice is that, DRAM overclocking is great or better for two DIMM setups, but as a compromise will not work as well with all four DIMM slots are populated. At least that’s the theory anyway.

The more I read the more confused I am. Now thinking about buying 4 sticks of Crucial Ballistix BL2K8G36C16U4W 3600 MHz so will end up with 32GB but @3600 and the price difference is negligible (assuming I will sell my sport LT). Thinking that this may eliminate any compatibility issues. Or am I getting it completely wrong?

I doubt youll really notice any dufference between your 3200c16 and 3600c16. I'd just get another 2 sticks of what you have. You can still buy it if you do a search. Its prob be the cheapest option
Do some youtube searches of 3200 v 3600 ram. Also gamernexus did a vid of 2 vs 4 sticks of 8gb ram. Concluded 4 stick were an improvement over 2, then 2x16 were an improvement over tge 4x8

Some good pointers. Totally forgot about GamersNexus. Watched some videos and you're right. There won't likely to be any noticeable difference between 3200 and 3600, plus 2 vs 4 sticks is academic given that I do no plan to overclock and differences are not huge. Case closed I think.

It depends on the CPU and board, but from what I’ve seen, two sticks 2xR. Four sticks 1xR.

If want you to fine tune the trimmings then things change a little, whole topic in itself.
