I actually completely forgot about this guy but not because what he's been up to. I briefly remember from several years ago but what always sticks in my mind was the Space Jam song. Never liked it back in 1996/97. It was never off the radio that I remember it was quite a depressing dull song that was engrained into my mind from way back.

Now it makes it even worse.

I was going to mention them. Since it came to light, I just can't listen to them in the same way anymore. I did try revisit them but it just sounds cringe worthy. Won't go near again.

I'd never heard of them (I'm old - they're after my time) and I don't think I've heard any of their music. But I felt sorry for the other members of the group. They were completely innocent but the success in their craft they'd worked for was completely ruined.

Lewis Carroll was a repressed peado. Should we ban Alice in Wonderland?

Evidence for that accusation? And yes, I know about the photos. I also know that the way such photos were interpreted was very different then, so they're not evidence of paedophilia.

Shakespeare might be a better example. Romeo and Juliet is very clearly child porn(*) by current UK legal definitions. The play is only legal today because of the artistic and cultural value exception clause.

* Juliet is explicitly stated to be 12 in the play. If you understand Elizabethan slang, the play makes it very explicitly clear that she was sexually active and the play portrays that in a very positive way. Which was legal in Shakespeare's day as the legal age of majority for women in England (and many other places) at that time was 12. Romeo's age isn't explcitly stated, but he was probably 14 for the same reason. It was generally considered unwise, but it was legally and socially acceptable.

What exactly is the crime of a "repressed peado" anyway.

By that definition they know they have unacceptable desires and aren't acting on them.

And it doesn't apply to Lewis Carroll anyway as his sexual desires were for women. His sex life was kept quiet because it was scandalous at the time. He had sex with women he wasn't married to. Some of those women were married to other people! Shocking! So it was covered up. Much later, some people claimed that their ignorance of Lewis Carroll's sex life was evidence that Lewis Carroll was a paedophile.

He took some naked photos of some children. In a time and place where those photos were interpreted as images of innocence and purity, so much so that they were mass printed on Christmas cards. The connection people made was with the cherubim order of Judeo-Christian angels. It was asexual. This is well documented. It's pure ignorance of context to claim otherwise.

I think it's a shame, as I liked She's Got That Vibe, Bump n Grind and Thanks God It's Friday, plus some of the stuff he wrote for Aaliyah (R.I.P. 2001) back in the mid 90s. It was part of my teen years. I wasn't keen on his mega-hit "I Believe I Can Fly" though.

I still listen to Michael Jackson.

Even if they're banged up now (or dead in Jacko's case), I think we're still allowed to enjoy their music if we liked it in the first place.
