Well that's the thing, what is called beta now used be to be call demo when betas were an actual thing and betas were work in progress. This is a demo that is showing what the game will be on release. Beta has become a marketing term as opposed to a stage in game development and it happened 10 years ago already if not more.

Any and all excuses from any other release that were saying that the beta is buggy because it is just a beta build were always proven to be wrong and the games would come out buggy mess almost identical to "beta" build, I see no reason to think otherwise in this case.

As I say, maybe it will be like this on release maybe it wont but then again I am one of the few people who still see the word beta and treat it as a beta. I wonder how many people ranting and raving on various forums about issues have even bothered to put in a beta bug report on those issues, you know in the way that you are supposed to do with a beta. I would bet its not very many. What we do know for certain is that this beta build is from August, you would imagine that SOMETHING would be changed between an August build and the release build in November, I'd find it difficult to believe that in November they would release the game with the exact same build as 4 months earlier and thus I give them some leeway on issues. I'm a little bit of a wait and see kind of guy than a straight to 100 degrees heat kind of guy :D

Fair point. But it's not that it's unfair criticism, Dice like many other developers now will release a buggy mess of a game that the playerbase will have to play test for a year before it becomes the final product ready to be released properly. From what I've read Dice said that although the split happened in August they still patched beta build and improved it in parallel with actual retail build. Sure major issues might be improved in time but history tells us that no, the beta state is what we get on release.

Aside from bugs and performance issues, the game itself is just disappointing, it seemingly made no major leaps in gameplay since bf4 8 years ago.

Have they said whether spotting is in the game at all? I know over the years spotting has been a contentious issue and I notice that the Q keybind is referred to as Ping rather than Spot. The drone appears to auto spot so I did wonder if they had made a design decision to make spotting a feature of a gadget rather than something all 128 players could do but I dont know as I cant seem to find any info on whether the game is supposed to have the traditional spotting style in it or not

I was reading something stating it was more like BFV than the 3D spotting in BF4, not having played BFV I'm not sure what to expect.

Played one match and I am very underwhelmed. The game looks just a tad better than BF4 from 2013 and runs worse, much worse (I'm sure it's technically much better but it does not translate into actual noticeable improvement). On 3080 at max settings ultrawide 1440p I am getting 70-80fps but even if I lower everything to minimum I ma still just getting 120fps and the game still feels laggy.

So overall, in my opinion if you want to play BF2042 then just play BF4, its the better BF2042 game.

On a side note, what is up what FOV setting being zero by default and goes from zero to 100 and seemingly has no relation to vertical nor horizontal FOV(game says its vertical but how can it be zero). Who thought this up? Why change the standard? It's just so infuriating, it's like the devs are making the game as annoying as they possibly can on purpose.
Lets face it, BF4 is the daddy, they just nailed it.

Absolutely agree with you , it will have bugs at release and it will take time to sort those bugs out. Do I think the beta state is what we get on release, no, to be honest I dont, even if literally just 1 item is different on release, lets say the FOV setting, then the beta state isnt what we get on release. We'll have to wait and see and maybe come release we can return to this post and either I can say I told you so or you can say I told you so :D

On the question of whether the game is disappointing, well thats a subjective one of course, I'm not disappointed with it, in fact I'm enjoying the BF2042 beta more than I enjoyed the BF1 or BFV betas , so it already puts it top of the last 3 Battlefields for me. I'm having a lot of fun and have already done 10 hours in the beta and expect to hit 20 hours before the beta ends and I dont generally put 20 hours into a game that I'm not enjoying. Its got issues, a lot of issues in the beta to be fair, but I'm enjoying the core game. However, you could take 99 other people and find that several dozen of them agree with me and several dozen disagree. Its definitely a very marmite and divisive beta.

Yep the more I play the closer I am to pre-ordering.

Just had a wonderful "Battlefield Only" moment, guy in front of me driving a vehicle, goes up the ramp and airborne into a passing helicopter

Enjoying it so far.

Vehicles seem weird, like you are skating on ice. With a broken large map and no compass it’s a bit difficult to relay where people are but i’m enjoying the no live spotting. Happy for them to keep that out and just resort to the manual pings which at the moment sometimes don’t work which I guess is due to a bug. Weapon attachment system is a nice take on things although I hope there will be the option to customise each slot eg. that won’t be the limit of attachments for guns. Weapon handling seems on the ball. Sliding is a disappointing surprise though.

Seems to be a harder BF3 at the moment which isn’t exactly a bad thing.

Weapon attachment system is a nice take on things

I do love the weapon attachment UI, makes a nice change to be able to change attachments so easily on the fly but still be able to clearly see whats happening in front of you while you do it, instead of getting killed because you were blind due to being in some inventory screen or something.

Talking of UI things I like, I also really like that when you are approaching a contested flag it shows you how many people from each side there are at the flag in numbers over the flag icon. Thats been very useful for me so far in seeing if its 3 to 1 or something as I approach a flag

Seems sensible to me, you encounter a bug you report it. Perhaps its one thats already been addressed internally perhaps its not and its a very unusual or extremely situationally specific bug or specific hardware setup related bug. Either way its got to be better to report a bug than not.

Can't say im a fan of the "specialists" which has basically killed off the class system. Or the vehicles which now regenerate to full health, which basically means repair tools are useless unless you're in the middle of a firefight. I'd much prefer a traditional class system so specific weapons are locked to specific classes, having snipers with rocket launchers and stingers etc is just weird. Also a bit odd that dice elected to use the lock on sound from bf4 to represent vehicles heavily damaged, seen a few people think it was a rocket lock on in some vids online before they finally twigged its been repurposed as a heavy damage alarm.

I think that is the thing which will be of most contention for people, some people like the specialists and the sort of lack of class system with being able to mix and match classes, others dont like it at all. Its one of the biggest issues of division I think. It reminds me of the division amongst MMO players between class based characters MMOs and non-class based characters MMOs. I'm kind of on the fence on the issue, I dont dislike the specialists but I dont especially like them either, the specialists arent enough to make me not play but not having them also wouldnt make me not play, I'm happy with it being either way.

Horrible game, stuttery mess.

It suffers from the same problem all battlefields since around 4 have, the maps are just too big and empty. Kinda feels like a free 2 play game

I'll go back to Battlefield 4 for my combat fix. Oh the good old days of Bad Company 2.

The maps need to be larger or it ends up like CoD, tripping over people all the time or being killed off spawn. Trust me, spawn on the big tower at the opposite end of the rocket and you’ll be busy!
