You could eyeball that offside. Unless the groundsman's been on the liquor he was a good 0.5-1 foot offside.

That would have been a pretty poor decision pre-VAR

Of course he plays the ball, he has no idea that Mbappe would be flagged offside. He cannot leave the ball in the hope that Mbappe's a foot offside. It's a clear flaw in the offside law.

It's any deliberate action. So if the ball was hit at Garcia and deflects off of him then it would be offside but because he's deliberately played the ball, it's onside. I know this was a grey area 4(?) years back when there was a similar incident in a Liverpool - Spurs game, when multiple refs disagreed on what the correct decision should be but that's seemingly been clarified now.

Either way, the rule is stupid. Garcia has to play the ball because he does not know for certain that Mbappe's offside. Mbappe being in an offside position has directly influenced the actions of Garcia - it's crazy that he's not considered active at the time the pass is played.
