Hi all! It's been a while since I've done this, but anyone notice any issues with the following spec? Will look for a GPU separately but system will be used for office work and light 1080p gaming...

mATX form factor.
I have an ATX modular corsair platinum PSU already

i5 10600KF (with stock cooler)
Asus prime B460M-K
Crucial ballistix 3600Mhz 2x8GB
WD Blue sn550 1Tb NVME
Thermal take core V21 case

Can source all this for £450

Question - will the ram downclock for the motherboard?
I want mATX for small footprint. (I'd like mITX, but I'd then have to get a new PSU and rise the price...)

Thanks for any

I'd be tempted to go for the b460m mortar for £10 more (assuming I'm looking at the same pricing as you) - better networking, audio, and stronger vrm.

I'd also be tempted to make use of all that space over the motherboard that the v21 case gives you to install a more effective and quieter cooler such as this for £25, or this for £35.

I've swapped out the i5 for a 10600k which has onboard gfx (seems to be better than 3600g too?!)

Also found an MSI b560m pro vdh motherboard @GreatAuk if you think that's better again?

The itx case seems intriguing - would cooling be ok with stock heatsink and fan? The i5 had high tdm I think

Yeah actually personally I think I would go for the b560m pro vdh. Seems to be reviewed OK, decent vrms, 2.5g networking, enough usb ports, and should allow you to run your ram at 3600mhz.

I think the integrated graphics on the 10600K are a long way behind an apu like the 3400g, not sure there is a 3600g...

The stock heatsink and fan will work fine, it's just that the fan will have to spin up to really high rpms whenever the cpu does any work, generating a lot of noise. It also won't be able to keep the cpu cool for very long when it's turbo boosting, meaning the cpu will drop its frequency quite quickly to avoid overheating. You'll get more, and quieter performance with pretty much any aftermarket cooler.
Edit: actually not sure the 10600k comes with a stock cooler, so you will need some kind of aftermarket cooler.

Thanks so much for all.of your help! I have a rough plan and might just manage a budget of £500... Just no GPU.
I meant a 5600g...
https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-amd_ryzen_5_5600g-1877-vs-intel_core_i5_10600k-1141

Not sure how to grade them

https://nanoreview.net/en/cpu-compare/intel-core-i5-10600k-vs-amd-ryzen-5-5600g

So a 5600g build may be better for onboard gfx.. Any thoughts on Gigabyte b550m ds3h if I go for the 5600g instead of the i5-10600k ? Also would the stock AMD cooler be sufficent? I believe AMD coolers used to be better...

This video has a fair bit of detail on the 5600G: https://youtu.be/KycNI1FxIPc
I think the summary is that the 5600G would be bit behind the 10600K in terms of cpu performance, but the integrated graphics are much more useable, being comparable to a GT 1030. If you're planning on doing a bit of gaming using integrated graphics only, then the 5600G is a decent choice. However if you'll be upgrading to a dedicated gpu in the near future then it's not so worthwhile - would be much better either waiting until you can buy a gpu along with an 5600X on the AMD side, or going for a 10600K in the Intel side (or some other cheaper option like the 10400 depending on how you value performance).

The AMD stock coolers aren't as good as they used to be, but the wraith stealth which would be included with the 5600G will still do OK, and would be an acceptable solution imo, although performance and noise would still benefit from a better cooler.

I think the mobo would probably be fine, although might struggle if you wanted to upgrade to a higher core count cpu in the future. I'd be tempted by a B450 mortar which are going for around £50 atm and would probably give very similar real world performance for your uses, although there are some tradeoffs going for b450 rather than b550.

Thank you so much. As a comparison, I currently have a Dell Inspiron 7559 i7-6700HQ with 4gb gtx 960M...

In short, I want gfx to beat that... Which I think means going for dedicated graphics.. but need to find one at an affordable price (max £300ish or £370 if I can get a 3060ti drop)

Yeah I think the 5600G's graphical performance would be comparable to a 960M, so would need dedicated graphics to see a big improvement.

A 3060Ti would be great if you could get hold of one.

New card pricing atm seems to be something like:
1030 gddr5 - £80 to £90
1050Ti - £200 - £230
1650 - £250+
and then nothing that makes sense (imo) available until you get to:
RTX 3060 Ti FE - £369 if you can get an FE in one of the drops
6600XT - £450ish
RTX 3060 - £500ish

Used cards can be a bit more reasonable, depending on where you get them. There is a shop that does 24 month warranties on used cards that might be worth having a look at.

That's a bit of a blow about the comparison... Left thinking I may as well stick with my laptop...

If I do upgrade, I clearly can't get a decent GPU for £250 for quite some time (both hardware hunting and funds) so...

With clever sourcing and cashing in of vouchers, I reckon I can get 5600g, third party CPU cooler, a b550m mortar, 16gb ddr4 3600, and a 500gb sn750 NVMe drive for just under £400. I would look for a cheap / second hand mATX case.

I could get a 11600k intel, which is pcie 4, but I think the onboard gfx would be pointless, so Ill can that idea.

Ok I'm getting closer and closer to pulling the trigger on:
Ryzen 5600g with 3rd party cooler
16gb crucial 3600mhz
500gb sn750 nvme

My real quandary now, is motherboard.
I think I want b550m, but I'm confused by all of the variations! WiFi may be handy but not a deal breaker is an MSI mortar fine for the ryzen and ram speeds? Overkill? Any other suggestions - would a £100 board be fine, overkill, or best plumbing for one closer to £150?

If I happen to find a gfx card soonish (before buying this lot), I will swap the 5600g for a 5600x

Final question - do overclockers still offer free delivery for forum members? :p
