Something a little more up-to-date on radio listening figures

BTbM7v.jpg

Source: RAJAR

Despite the increase in DAB radio sets now in cars, and the increase in the numbers of adults who say they have access to a DAB radio at home, and the COVID furlough of 2020 meaning more adults were working from home, DAB listening figures fell for 2020 compared to 2019. All this set against the backdrop of 25 years of DAB availability in the UK; it still has only 2/5ths of the market and hasn't yet surpassed analogue radio despite the misinformation campaigns and aggressive marketing.

The biggest growth is from Online/Apps. My guess is that's the effect of smart speakers. That's pretty-much what many of us have been saying. Here are the official figures that bear that out.

I just know where this go as a response…… info is out of date by a year :cry: But seeing as you’ve at least given UK info , that’s a big thumbs up from me

Although again from the same site / time period

Good day for the DAB+.

National DAB+ launching in France, fueling rapid growth in DAB+ receiver sales

12th October 2021
1px.png

"Today, France launches two new national multiplexes that will broadcast 25 DAB+ stations, including national services from Radio France and leading private broadcasters, to metropolitan regions in France. The initiative allows millions of people to benefit from a wider range of national and regional radio stations, improved audio quality, station / programme information and slideshow images.

The new multiplexes will broadcast along the Paris-Lyon-Marseille axis. The 25 services include three new DAB+ only stations and 22 stations that are also broadcast in FM. In addition, DAB Slideshow is deployed, displaying colour images to listeners, such as station branding, song information and weather. This will pave the way for DAB+ to become the dominant way that France listens to radio at home.

Patrick Hannon, WorldDAB president, said ‘The launch of two national multiplexes in France is a critical milestone in the development of DAB – not only for France but for the whole of Europe. This launch, coupled with the recently introduced French radio receiver law, creates an unprecedented opportunity for growth in the DAB+ receiver market in France. As the market leader in DAB receivers, Frontier is supporting DAB growth in Europe with their Siena and Kino DAB+ receiver solutions.’

Frontier forecasts that growth of DAB+ receiver sales in France will exceed 50% in 2021 when compared to 2020 and that this trend will continue. Frontier has focused its DAB+ solutions so that they provide the best listener experience by being compliant with standards and digital tick certification. They also support advanced features such as colour screen, DAB Dynamic Label plus (DL+), DAB slideshow and Frontier has developed consumer focused features such as the FM and DAB combined service list BestTuneTM, continuous scanning for up to date stations ActiveScanTM and dynamic interference removal NoiseSkipTM. In addition, brands using Frontier technology in their products will benefit from Frontier’s extensive experience, having shipped over 50 million DAB/DAB+ modules.

Prem Rajalingham, Managing Director of Frontier, said: ‘DAB+ is really taking off in France and we are delighted to be able to enable brands to power the growth of DAB+ through our range of exciting consumer radios based on Frontier technology. We have seen significant DAB receiver sales grow in France and expect to see 50% year on year growth in 2021’.

In addition to new multiplexes, French law was updated to state that since 28th May 2021, radios with an alphanumeric screen must receive digital broadcast radio - ‘Other radios (terminals), for which the reception function of radio services broadcast is not purely incidental, and have an alphanumeric screen, must be capable of receiving digital terrestrial radio.’

DAB+ market size is expected to grow over the next five years. Frontier allows brands to create market leading DAB+ and SmartRadios, powering the leading audio brands. Please contact us to discuss opportunities and new products that you are interested in.

Twenty-five new small-scale DAB multiplex licenses have now been awarded by media regulator Ofcom, completing its first round of licensing for the new technology. “The rollout of this innovative technology will give listeners across the United Kingdom an unprecedented choice of locally produced content — serving communities and audiences across the country in a way never seen before,” said Kevin Bakhurst, Ofcom’s group director of Broadcasting and Online Content. “The UK’s commercial and community radio industry continues to go from strength to strength.”

Private operators also keen to develop DAB+
20.10.2021 - Czech Republic

From next year, Czech Radio will finance the development of DAB+ by switching off AM. Said Karel Zýka: "At the end of the year, we are shutting down AM and its resources will be set aside for digital broadcasting. Czech Radio now has all its stations on DAB+". Czech Radio plans to further improve signal coverage and in the next phase of coverage, the focus will be on indoor reception. Commercial network operators are also keen to develop DAB+ in the Czech Republic.

Wtf is this obsession with DAB? Is the OP on a spectrum or something?

It's dead, it's crap and it needs throwing in the bin once and for all. I've had unlimited data on my phones for 5 odd years, and my phone automatically connects to my car's bluetooth so i don't even need to look away from the road to change tracks. With Spotify I have pretty much every song you could think of, tons of podcasts and when I feel like listening to the news I just switch to the radio which works perfectly fine on FM and has signal everywhere.

I question the motives of this obsession with a dead technology, it's either trolling or a mental issue.

Now if you'll excuse me, my music just stopped, need to go flip the record.

Spotify can die in the same way Winamp with mp3s died.
No such app lasts forever.

DAB+ will last. DAB+ gives you independence from the "unlimited data".
Because you have professional selection of much more content than your own limited knowledge of the Spotify content.

"I heard the song on the radio, and then found it with Shazam or in Spotify." :D

Lol. What a load of tosh. Keep sucking that crack pipe princess, here in 2021 we've got more music at our disposal than your rubbish DAB will ever have.

Your inability to adapt is very much a you problem, I don't think anyone really cares tbh.

No one needs "more music". People listen to their favourite songs only, at a time maybe 5-10 songs max.
People don't need thousands and thousands of unknown and disliked genres which they don't listen to.

Fixed. You might be satisfied with your limited music choices, but those of us who have embraced technology are able to, and do enjoy a ton of music.

Nice try speaking on behalf of everyone though, you'd make a great politician :D

So then why would you listen to the radio if you only listen to 'your favourite songs only'?

400+ million iPods sold make it clear that you're talking our of your arse. So I challenge you to prove it.

Your choice in German oompah music is non of the British Public broadcasters concern, given you can't receive their signals.

Does make you wonder, although they have mentioned in other threads that they spend their day trolling so....¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Surprised admins haven't stepped in to clear it up though, considering it's mostly @4K8KW10 just copy-pasta'ing random selective articles and others having to correct them with actual knowledge and intelligence.

New RAJAR listening data confirms predominance of digital radio platforms
28.10.2021 - Top story - United Kingdom

Digital listening in the UK has surged to 65.8% of all radio listening. DAB is now the predominant platform for radio listening accounting for 43% of all listening compared to 34.2% for AM/FM. The strong performance of digital platforms has been boosted by the launch of a number of new digital stations in the last 18 months. Digital listening in car now accounts for 53% of all in car listening, with DAB in car accounting for 46.6% of listening (compared to AM/FM’s 33.1%). Ford Ennals, CEO of Digital Radio UK, said: ‘’The new RAJAR listening data for Q3 2021 confirms the importance of digital listening and digital platforms which now account for two thirds of all radio listening. It’s funny to consider that some radio industry commentators used to question the viability of DAB which is now comfortably the predominant radio platform accounting for 25% more hours of listening than FM and AM combined. It’s good to see the new distinctive digital-only stations launched during the pandemic finding audiences and supporting digital growth.”
