Did a double take when I walked past this - definitely not what you expect to see outside a Texas BBQ restaurant. Owner had a matching Renault t shirt and everything!

Just in case the fake badge and gaffer tape around the rear window wasn’t enough to convince you of this “Bentleys” identity….

We have a tatty piece of paper stuck to the window…. :D

Why do 300C owners do this? - In fairness, It was very well polished, got a great reflection of my truck in its paintwork…. :p

When announced and tested they were incredible. In that era a Porsche Turbo was circa 315bhp, a Ferrari 348 around 300bhp and the F40 and 959 (the first of the hypercars it could be argued) were 400bhp and here was a Vauxhall with 377bhp.

It shows how crazy the world is today with 400bhp hot hatch backs! It also shows why spreadsheets should never be used to determine best!

AMG 45 or F40….both have 400bhp and the Merc has 4WD so it’s better in the corners init
Very true, I’ll never forget scaring myself silly back in the early 90’s test driving a Sierra RS Cosworth, it only had 204bhp but by god those horses seemed much wilder than a car of today with 200 ish bhp.

No idea, all they do is make themselves look foolish. It's a shame, as I actually like the 300C but this sort of thing puts you right off :p

I see quite a few like that.

When people ask what they drive, do they say "a Bentley" then get offended when others go "errm no it's a crappy Chysler"?

Popped into Caffeine and Machine today for the first time for a car get together. A few friends had organised a meet with Porsche CGT's, there were around 27 lined up at one point but I counted 15 turned up before I left.

But before I get to the cars, the star of the day without question was this:

The place itself for those who haven't been:

And some Boxsters:

George Williams the automotive photographer was standing with me and a few others when I took these so I think he will be massively envious of my skills.

CGT's are not a car that really captured me, but god they sound incredible.

Zero traction control, soft suspension, lightness, narrow tyres, no clever diff, brakes from, well the 80's.

Bloody kids think 200bhp is not enough these days.

Ha! yes absolutely, I had the pleasure to work opposite Turbo Systems back in the late 90’s and got to try a few modified ones that had proper brakes, tyres, suspension but still no T/C , all equally terrifying I can assure you. :D

Tbf that first pic is making me hungry:D. I had the please of going to a porsche meet at specialist cars of Malton (very expensive imo) and they started a carrera gt indoors. It sounded awesome, of I didn't have kids I'd totally be passing off the neighbours with one (I'd also need a second mortgage though:cry:).

About 200hp and 80s cars, surely they weighed a lot less than modern cars so presumably had good power to weight?

Hmm a bit of googling tells me it's slower than a fiesta st:p. I do think you lose a lot of sensation going modern, comparing my old 911 from 2001 to my current e92 is a bit of a difference (and I noticed the Los of feel going from a C2 to a 911 turbo of the same generation). I've had the misfortune of driving mm mum's 2001 a class and it's world's apart. I've also driving the previous gen bmw e330 hybrid and it was hard to tell which way the tyres were even facing in comparison to my car :(.

Was more to do with how the cars actually made the power. It was nothing, nothing, nothing and then OH POOOOP HOLD ON! 200HP these days is all smooth and linear because its better, but 200HP back in the day just smacked you in the face hard and tried to kill you. :D

Mate had a 205 GTi that had a turbo technics conversion, he also had an Mi16 as well, both drove totally different, the Mi16 was brutally fast across a back road, more so than the other, but the Turbo Technics car felt vastly quicker and a lot scarier especially with the high boost button pressed.

Light car, 200HP mapped so it has lag sometimes no option on turbos back in the day but it meant for incredibly fun car with relatively low horsepower.
Some manufacturers have realised what makes a fun car and have had some decent recent attempts at it but so many others are so far off the mark and just think big horsepower is the answer.

Weight is definitely a big thing. The mark 1 golf may have only had 108bhp but weighed only 810kgs. The mark 7 has over 220 bhp but weighs not far of double at 1500kgs so the bhp per tonne is only 25 more.

And certainly you would notice it on B roads.

Oh the joys of those days when hot hatches were all around 800kgs in weight.

Being light is more than just the hp/ton. It makes everything feel more responsive. Once you get under a ton things feel super agile.

There were no nannies and emissions stuff holding them back either. They can interfere a lot with the throttle response on modern cars.

Later 205s were crippled once a CAT had to be fitted. The 1.6 barely had any power left and the 1.9 lost almost 2 seconds of its 0-60 time.

Cars were so unsafe in the 80's and I recall so many near misses back then. I had a couple of mates who were killed in car crashes or involved in crashes where others were killed. We all drove like nutters but the cars were not fast and the roads were far less busy than they are today. Cars were smaller too so you had more room to play with when you went 'rallying' around the local lanes. No bikes to worry about in large groups like today, no cameras or mobile phones to make you infamous on the uninvented internet and no one really that bothered about kids in their cars as long as they were out of site.

How I didn't write off my mini I have no idea. The two lads I raced around with back then wrote their cars off in front of me (mini and Opel Kadet) as the ABS on my mini saved me. Well I say ABS, the brakes were so bad I could have stomped on them with the force of Thor and the wheels would not have locked (drum brakes) and I managed to drive around my mate who had just parked his mini into the back of my mates Kadet....

The Kadet was rebuilt and 3 days afterwards a woman in Birmingham drove into the back of it again and wrote that off too. I still remember my mate knocking on the door "you are not going to ****ing believe this" to then stand back and point to a wrecked Kadet....AGAIN :D

I got band for reckless driving a few days later.

Indeed, there is a good reason young drivers were far more likely to claim off insurance back then. My mate lost control of his xr3i at 90mph round a tight bend (sign posted 40mph max) and it ended up going through a stone wall and flipping onto its roof and taking some poor guys garden shed out. He had 3 passengers and the sunroof was open and one of them last his hand as it must have dropped through the roof as it flipped over. :(
