Best 17" Gaming laptop suggestions?

Quite a few of the 130 rated ones have a performance mode in the control panel that allows them to be run at 140 as well (just not guaranteed it will run at that).

I disagree, I have the MSI RTX 3070 laptop 140w, it is a good laptop, it's one of the best and most powerful laptops of the bunch, yet, it's definitely no where 20% of desktop performance! No were as good as a desktop version, keep dreaming.

It can't run Cyberpunk2077 in 4K. My cousin even has the RTX 3080 laptop and we laugh about how rubbish the performance is compared to my desktop 3080.

You see, regarding the performance, a 3080 desktop will run 4K, 60fps plus on max settings all day long in Cyberpunk2077, Anthem , AAA titles etc... you can even get 4K 120fps/120Hz in tons of games like COD,Battlefield...

A laptop 3080 cannot even cope with 4K games I mentioned and will choke and stutter , also they run so hot, their CPU temps get to 95c when gaming, they have poor cooling . On a desktop, you can have the CPU running at 65c max.

These mobile 3 series laptops can't even power 4k panels, so 99% have 1080p panels for that reason.

I can't find any decent benchmarks for the 140 watt variant in a wide range of games but the 115 watt variant isn't completely hideously behind in a lot of cases the desktop part https://www.techspot.com/review/2206-geforce-rtx-3070-laptop-vs-desktop/ (there are exceptions like RS6 with medium settings where the desktop part is more than 65% faster).

4K is another story again.

More testing needed but the 140w 3070 is also outpacing my overclocked 2070S (so a 2080 basically) at 3440x1440. Puts it within the same general ballpark as the 3060Ti in game. Makes sense considering Core and clock speed difference.

Should put it up against my RX6800 at the same resolution. My expectation is a bloodbath considering the 6800 quite easily outpaces a desktop 3070 (depending on the game) but should be quite interesting to see the overall delta.

You cannot defy physics: power supply, cooling and space is limited on laptops. Apparently you can't break the laws of greed either. The main reason why 3080m is SO MUCH behind the desktop 3080 is not the power, but the fact that it uses a 3070 chip, NOT GA102 chip that the desktop version uses, hence a whapping 42% cuda core difference and crazy difference in performance.


3080 mobile (150W+15W) < 3070 desktop FE / 2080 ti desktop.

These 3080/3090 desktop cards overclocked with an overclocked CPU at 5Ghz and RAM can net users with maybe 100 to 200 percent more performance than the 3080m laptop (165w).


All that said, the best laptop is a 3080 laptop, just don't expect 3080 desktop performance.

Mine at least in the games and benchmarks I have is around 7% on average behind the desktop 3060ti at 1440p - it is a bit of an odd one though as at 1080p the laptop CPU can't push it enough to keep up with the desktop parts when the balance shifts to CPU but still very capable at 1080p and then going the other way due to the cut-down spec it struggles more at 4K resolutions widening the gap. 1440p is the sweet spot for reducing the delta vs the desktop parts but also about as far as the 140 watt 3070 is suited for gaming wise.

Can't say I've personally had any problems with the 10870H and thermals or power.

It's a common problem with gaming laptops, the CPU runs very hot when at full load. People undervolt their CPUs to run cooler.


My 140w 3070 laptop sounds like a jet turbine when gaming / full load and CPU temps can get to 90- 95c in demanding games. It's an i7-11800H Processor 2.40 GHz - 4.60 Ghz.In non demanding games it runs 75c - 85c.

But this is a good laptop, and it is a top spec laptop, and is recommended, just explaining what to expect.

Not at all, it depends what you are wanting it for.

3 series laptops can play games, but don't expect performance like their desktop counterparts and spend your hard earned considering that.
