On the road....
Although not liked by some here, my ex had a 118d Sport manual (65plate) which I thought was an absolute blast to drive, just enough power to be fun but not enough get out of shape too easily, reminded me of a very refined (by comparison) Mk2 Escort in the way you could throw it around with the T/C turned off.

Depends if you like - and can handle - RWD, my nephew has an M240i,he’s a similar age to you and has already stacked it three times, each time his was being fixed he had a 118d courtesy car which he admitted was far more in line with his driving ability! :D

What do you actually want because the cars you've mentioned are just hatchbacks not hot hatches. It may be that this is all you want really, but you should clarify before everyone just recommends fast cars that'll be total sheds for the money.

Yea there arent many cheap hot hatches. Under 5k they will probably need some work. Suspension parts, brakes, etc. Most seem to bottom out around there.

And a total shed for under 5k.

(And so old that even spending more than that doesn't exactly get you away from that risk)

I'm not sure about that I've had my 125i for 3 years and apart from a leaky rear diff and oil changes its been all good.

I'm sure any fiesta or similar at £5k is going to be lower quality to begin with and also need parts. Inherent with cheap performance cars.

You're asking for a hot hatch and you mention a 118d? You're gonna be in for one hell of a surprise if that's your benchmark :D

Clio 172 / 182 / 197 / 200.

^This is the correct answer. Or a Fiesta ST if you can find one. You'll likely find a Mk5 GTI for that money too but it'll be a leggy older car with questionable service history and 4 mismatched tyres.

I was looking at Corsa VXR, Leon Cupras, and a Type R GT but didn't know if i was missing any, or if i wanted a warm hatch that is a bit newer and less mileage.
