The Twingo RS cup is fun too, but they are actually appreciating now. Probably over 5k for one.

Look for a warm hatch, you might not get the same level of handling/speed but you'll get something reasonably close for a lot less money

Renault Megane TCe180 @ 190BHP + 322NM for around £4K (if you can find one that is!) more than enough power for UK roads & handles like a dream as its a Renault Sport designed chassis & engine ...just slightly less power & 11 insurance groups lower

Corsa VXR is a good shout, you could get an older one with some change for any work needing done. Main thing with any hot hatch is how it's been looked after, buy the wrong Corsa and you could end up with a healthy bill for P4 issues. That seems to be the main issue with them but if you can find one stock, low miles and well looked after then it should be fine and I know from experience that the parts for the Corsa VXR are not that expensive.
