Always suspicious of people paying for their food shop with notes too. And we're not talking of a lunchtime meal deal. These are an absolute rammed packed trolley with a bill of 150-200.
Blimey, paying for a trolley full of food with cash? Better get HMRC on speed dial.

He's got a point though. Frankly that was an absolutely ridiculous statement to make. We don't live in North Korea or China.
Why is it ridiculous though? Banks and credit card companies are already very strict and try to tell people what they can and can't spend their money on, e.g. banks stopping people from buying Crypto, Mastercard and Visa blocking Pornhub. In America, supposedly the land of the free, civil asset forfeiture allows law enforcement to seize all of your assets if they suspect involvement in crime, even if you haven't been charged with or convicted of anything. The UK may not be as bad as China (yet) but we're currently sleepwalking into an authoritarian rule.

Do they? I've not been stopped purchasing crypto.

Most of the reason banks are questioning the intentions of your money is because too many idiots are getting duped by scammers in one way or another. It's like people can't be trusted with their own money these days.

"The Poor"

I use cash where possible as it'll go a little way in delaying the transition to cashless society where your "money" will be controlled by someone with a push of the button and you've no access to it, if your opinions don't match what governments want you to think or say....or if there's a power cut

Rocks>goats>gold&silver>coins>notes>chip&pin>contactless>future chip implant

What part of that evolution makes you stick to notes?

2 years ago the world was still "normal" but here we are...
Things change and I can understand peoples thinking behind it although personally I don't carry cash unless I have a specific reason to.

Has any mentioned that cards are completely useless when the internet/banks are down? Cash is king and there's nothing better than pushing passed a queue of card peasants, to pay for your trolley of shopping with cash under such circumstances.

I can tell you something better than that, sitting fourth or fifth on a taxi rank outside a hotel, when someone comes out wanting a £50 ride to the airport and bypasses the old boys that take cash only and comes to me as the only one on the rank who takes cards, how do you like them apples you dinosaurs?

150 - 200 for a rammed trolly is that at pound land, or just a trolly of lettice?

I always have £150 cash, plus my cc, paying with my phone the app takes 10 to 20 seconds to open. Frequently wants to update.. Technology might be there in 20 years when we pass peak slowness and stuff gets fast.. The last time I trusted my phone something had updated and it would not work if I'd been wealth enough to throw 500 away I'd have smashed the phone

My takeaway from this post is that smashing your phone probably would have been a good idea since it sounds like you need a new one!

I think that unless you're sitting in some village in the north thats been cut off for a week after Arwen because the energy companies have forgotten you exist thats probably quite unlikely.

Yep, finger on the reader to wake, beep, transaction complete. Maybe a second from waking to processing payment if that. No need to open Google pay unless changing the default card.

Exactly my experience as well, finger is on the fingerprint scanner as I'm pulling it out of my pocket, by the time it's on the card reader it's unlocked and ready to go

Not an iPhone user then? I can double tap the power button and it's paid for within 2-3 seconds unless you're just exaggerating to make a point?

Haven't read the whole thread, just the first post. My mum may be in the elderly bracket, but she's not poor (she's not rich either ;)) and she only uses cash. She doesn't trust credit/debit cards and has no interest in using them. Funnily enough I have no problem with that. I do tend to use my credit card these days for most purchases as it makes it easier to tally what I've spent at the end of the month, but I do still use cash too. There are also a couple of takeaways just over the road from me that are cash only, presumably so they don't have to pay the card machine fees as they're not allowed to pass that on anymore.

FWIW.
I am elderly. I do use cash. Once a month I pay the window cleaner a tenner. A taxi occasionally - the last time was a pub lunch with my family. That was a fiver. The rest is things like groceries, internet shopping, all delivered to our door. No cash required.
