How do you all insure your watches? Just a case of popping it on the home insurance or is there a better way?
Mine are on the home insurance, not physically listed because they fall under the £2.5K value of the chosen insurer, some need you to list items over £1k (wonder how many people think of their pc's etc...especially with current gpu prices), which to be honest could turn into a bit of a pain.

It might be worth checking how your home insurance company would deal with a watch like a rolex, specifically if it is outside of the house. I know on quotes I was able to add high value items so some at least must have experience with things like watches.

Having said that if I had a watch worth considerably more than 2.5K, or something rather enticing to thieves such as a rolex, I would likely be looking at a specialised insurance due to the difficulty in replacing it rather than the actual value, which at least in the case of rolex seems to be going up weekly lol. Just think about how hard it would be to get a replacement rolex with high second hand prices and AD restricting supplies etc.

Looking at buying my first German watch with a roughly £1k budget. I've had my eye on both the Nomos Tangente 35 and Sinn 556i for a few years now.

Both serve different purposes - Nomos is very dressy with in house movement whereas the Sinn is an everyday tool watch.

I've seen both in the flesh but never tried them on. The Nomos can currently be had for £1,045 and the Sinn (red secondhand, fine link bracelet) for £1,147.

Any thoughts on which is the better choice from the two? I'll probably eventually end up with both!

My other watches include BB58 and a Seiko Alpinist. I don't have a white dial watch yet.

Thanks.

If you'll likely end up with both, like you say, think about things in a slightly different way.

What watch are you more likely to make use of?
Would the sinn be ignored due to the bb58?
How often do you 'dress up' for a dress watch like the nomos? Although to be honest I'd say the nomos isn't a 'dress' watch in the strictest sense.
Is either of them likely to be discontinued in the near future?

Also as a little side thought, seeing as you're after German and you like the Bauhaus design of the nomos, have you looked at Junghans?

The Max Bill is a good shout and a nice looking piece.

In terms of the other two - I'd likely wear the Sinn the most. The BB58 is a high end (to me) watch that I still baby. I do also dress up reasonably frequently for work functions which is definitely Nomos (or Junghans) territory.

The Nomos is currently heavily discounted from Jura (not my preferred place to buy from!) whereas I've never seen the Sinn on offer anywhere, over and above the standard 10% discount that is easily achievable.

I'd say that makes the decision relatively easy imo.... stop babying the bb58 as much and buy the nomos/junghans :p

While that might sound a bit daft, it makes more sense (to me anyway lol) than buying a sinn that would essentially become your 'non babied' bb58 and in turn likely mean you'd either baby the bb58 more or wear it less.

Oh and I was actually thinking more of the form A (closer to the nomos) or meister (bit more dressy) than the max bill for junghans, not that any are really bad watches.

I think you've just about convinced me I don't need the Sinn (yet!).

I've had my eye on Nomos for a few years but then I've never really looked at Junghans before. They do offer a lot for the money. They also have a long and interesting history.

Looking for a no-date complication which narrows things down quite a lot. Just need to work out which design I prefer the most from the rest.

Let me throw in Stowa as well then, they do a lot of designs similar to nomos but can be a bit more affordable (usually due to the movement being selitta, rather than in house) in some cases.

Only 'negative' on the junghans is the fact that some of the max bill (not sure on others) don't use a sapphire glass, although they've recently done a sapphire version with the anniversary edition. So if that's a thing just check them carefully before 'buying'.

If I was to go for a Max Bill, I'd go for something close to the original design which would mean plexiglass rather than sapphire. I would actually prefer the manual wind but I think 34mm is just going to be too small. 38mm is the sweet spot. Scratch resistance is a concern with most Junghans due to the favoured use of Plexiglass.

Stowa (and Laco) are also on my radar but without doubt, it will be a flieger from one of those two. For a dress watch, Nomos and Junghans fit the bill far better IMHO.

In all honesty, I'd say this is one of those times where you need to try it on for size, the 'full face' design of junghans and nomos make them wear slightly different to their actual sizes.... mind you I know I could never wear a 34mm watch, it would just look tiny on my 8inch wrist, so I'm guessing you've got a 'larger' wrist for not wanting smaller than 38mm.

Thanks for your help @lsg1r - I've decided to stop procrastinating.....Max Bill, 34mm, hand wind on order.

After remembering the Nomos at 35mm was going to be fine, hopefully the Max Bill at 34mm will also be fine. Leaves me with plenty of spare change for a few straps too :D
