I'm in a maisonette in an old Victorian terrace - the walls to the sides are great, and I hear no noise at all. However, there's no insulation whatsoever in the ceiling, and I get no sleep as the man above me snores like a train. Absolutely losing my mind over it
On my yearly Le Mans escapades I have really good ear plugs. They can keep out the sound of the many cars being revved and fireworks detonating next to the tent. I use the Honeywell Howard Leight ear plugs.

Alternatively I see there are products on the market that are supposed to help with this like the Bose sleepbuds.

All old houses have damp but all new houses are built as cheaply as possible. Terraced house you may or may not hear your neighbours, but you definitely will in a new build semi or link house.
