Renting a place inside the walls of York for a few days with friends and just trying to sort out some restaurant ideas and food.

Currently suggested are Skosh, Melton's and Le Cochon Aveugle

They seem ok but for whatever reason I'm not overly tempted. Anything slightly off the beaten track? I am a real nerd for cellar restaurants too! As an example of the sort of restaurant / place I really am after:

Also looking for a good butcher and grocer for a meal in. A decent wine shop suggestion would be helpful too!

I used to love going to the Goods Shed in Canterbury. I loved living in Kent but the traffic was horrendous. Canterbury is better than Oxford with regards to selection of shops and restaurants. Pubs are better in Oxford though. Miss both places to be honest.

I too would be interested in York as I'm planning a trip up at some point.

The blue barbakan is a great polish restaurant.

Would also recommend a visit to the house of trembling madness for a cheeky pint or two and a great selection of ales
