ATi vs nVidia is a complete waste of time to try and find a "winner" nowadays, there's virtually nothing between the brands themselves.

Around the £100 mark on AGP I think you're looking at either a nVidia 6600GT or ATi X800GTO.

You might find a 6800 for this price but I doubt it unless you buy second hand or find some clearance stock.

Reckon you could get up to £40 for your old card, so with a budget of £140 you could get a fairly decent card by my reckoning.

OcUK GeForce 6600 GT 256MB DDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-036-OK) @ £117.44 inc VAT

or if ATI then: Sapphire ATI Radeon X800 GTO 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-122-SP) @ £123.32 inc VAT

I'd only go for the later... but thats because iv'e only ever had ATI cards... not that there better, but it was my first card. It never let me down so i stuck with ATI with every card since.

Can.....open.....worms.....everywhere

For me, its has to be Nvidia, but only because ive used them all my life and ive never had a problem and their software is pretty easy to use as im used to it.

They always seem to return that tiny little bit better performance for the price too.

The performance difference and the application of the hardware is going to make little difference and there are pros and cons for both brands. Either way you should be happy with the outcome.

Try Googleing and read a few 'shootouts', read the reviews of people that have bought them, look for the cheapest price and a deal that happens to be going at the time...

Just over £100 (£105.69 Including VAT at 17.5%) will get you a Sapphire ATI Radeon X800 GTO 512MB DDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-118-SP) from OcUK which will give you a fair amount of future proofing...

Just under £100 (£99.82 Including VAT at 17.5%) will get you a BFG GeForce 7600 GS OC 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-024-BG)
also from OcUK which gives you the legendary BFG lifetime warranty.

Streatching just a little further to (£135.07 Including VAT at 17.5%) will get you XFX GeForce 7600 GT 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (PVT73G-UDL3) (GX-078-XF) which is also a brilliant little card.

Point is, if you look you will find, the info is there and for future reference a thread header should try to be accurate rather than incite a flame war :D

To be fair, 512MB RAM does jack for cards that slow. It barely does anything for even the newest cards, to be honest. If anyone were to buy a GTO I would definitely recommend the 256MB model instead and have them save a few quid, just me though.

Your suggestion would mean he'd need a new board. ;)
