Thinking of selling...

Hi

I have a 51 plate Leon Cupra. I would hope I could get about £7,000 for it, as its the leather spec version and low mileage for its age.

I am thinking of selling it as it seems to have a string of things going wrong all the time and it's getting expensive now!

Now I would want to replace it with something of similar/ better performance and spend no more than 8-9K. What would you guys recommend?

*edit* PS I am 23 and will have 2 years NCB in August.

I really want to get an M3 in a few years (and I was planning to keep the Leon until I'd saved enough for a decent one) so in order to keep that 'dream' alive I don't want to spend too much now. I could theoretically get an M3 now as I have about £20K in funds, but this would probably be unwise at this stage, no?

Thanks

Is performance the only criteria or are you wanting luxury/4 seats/4 doors/turbo or NA etc.
Well it would have to be roughly Leon- sized. I would want something with a spec similar to my Leon- i.e. climate control, electric windows, ABS, etc. Leather would be nice too.

3 or 4 door- not fussy.

Turbo/ NA again, not fussy as long as it has some poke to it :)

I'm not really a badge freak so don't mind what make it is as long as it is reliable!

BMW 328Ci.

0-60 6.something, nearly 200bhp, nice interior, many have leather.

It's like an M3 for people who can't quite afford a nice M3 yet :)

Permission to go BMW-pimping-crazy, please?
You reckon that's the best bet then?

The next big quesion in that case would be whether I blow my load (of cash of course!!) on an M3 or keep to the above budget and save the M3 for a few years.........

Or why not compromise? You know a 330Ci Sport on an 02 or a 52 plate can be had for around £13k, and is almost as good as an M3 :)

Civic Type-R perhaps? (or maybe some sort of turbo'd Jap car, they're always a good bet)
Don't really like the CTR. I chose the Leon over it in the first place, as it suits my style of driving more (i.e. I don't need to thrash the balls off my car to make it go fast :p )

Lets put it like this, if you can afford to buy the M3 twice , then, you can afford to buy , insure and maintain (properly) an M3.

If not, don't buy the M3, get a more pocket friendly variant. ;)

I'd have no issues with the 328i, a great engine, got one in my car! :)

Oh come on, that's a load of crap. M3's aren't ferraris. I hate this 'if you can afford to run two...' rubbish, as it's simply not true.

I agree with Fox, BM is the way for you I think. Purely because it'll feel like more of an upgrade.

Anything VAG won't feel any different to what you have. Nothing French really fits the bill. CTR or something Jap like a Celica will only be the same speed as your current car, and doesn't really add to what you've got in anyway.

With a beemer, ok its got roughly the same amount as power, but but everything's just that little bit better about it.

Go for a newish 330i/d Sport, pretty much spot on for your situation. Insurance will be sensible, and the M3 will be a good step up afterwards. I can post pics of my 330 if you've not seen them and want to.

True but looking on Autotrader, if I am going to restrict my budget, I'm looking at buying something with 85,000 miles on it! A bit of a leap from my Leon's 34,000!

NickXX- yes please :)

I said run it properly, which in my mind would include a decent specialist. - You can easily cut corners, but I would'nt want to on such a car.

Price up a full exhaust system, exchange gearbox, engine etc etc etc Not cheap for an M3.

My point is the M3 isn't an average run of the mill Bm, far from it. Its running costs can (but often arn't) be astronomical.

All well & good spending £20k on a car (or £8 -£9k) to then find no spare funds for unforseen disasters isn't it?

FWIW, the M3 will trounce quite a few (older) Ferraris. :p

So you reckon if you bought an M3 for 2 years you'd need to be able to buy it twice to run it?

So its going to cost £10,000 a year to run?

Pull the other one, it's got bells on :p
