    Computer Science at Bath?

I studied at Bath, and actually did a number of Computer Science modules as part of my maths course. The computer science lecturers are by-and-large very good and there are some real experts in their field. The CompSci course is fantastic and there's good job prospects. Definitely go for the...

Disposing Of Customers Computers. In a shop. After a year.

Write a letter to whoever has left the computer clearly stating that you have had the computer for x amount of time, and you have made several attempts to contact them without any reply. State that your policy, as clearly displayed in the shop, is to sell items that have not been paid for 3...

    Need some upgrade advice

Get a 560Ti and the 8 gigs of RAM. Leave out the SSD, it won't improve ingame performance significantly.

    What cpu??

If a core is disabled, there's no guarantee it'll work. Some people get all four cores perfectly stable at high speed, other people get stuck with a duffer that won't unlock and overheats like a madman if you try to push it more than a couple hundred mhz. Foxconns are pretty awful, but bear in...

    MSI Gen3 Upgrade?

No. A motherboard upgrade would necessitate a CPU upgrade as well, and a £150 board plus a £170+ CPU would barely grant you anything extra, unless you spend your days trying to get good scores on benchmarks. If heat is an issue, look at a better graphics solution- those 480s are mini radiators.

    What cpu??

Apart from the fact that your link doesn't work, yes that motherboard should support your CPU. That said, buying a motherboard to upgrade your CPU on the off chance the cores will unlock is more than a little stupid.

    Will this all work

Yes, but you've picked some terrible choices there. What are you using it for?

Is it time for an upgrade???

Holy table breaking batman! The Q6600 is still a very capable CPU, even at stock, although I advise giving overclocking a go if you experience slowdowns. The 4870 is a very powerful GPU and you shouldn't be experiencing any lag, but if you're a "max twinklies" kind of guy, a 6950 2GB will do...

    upgrade for £50?

Spend it on booze, narcotics or women of questionable morality. You're not going to get much of an upgrade for that out of £50.

    New build - your thoughts?

Why not just buy the i5 2500K now? Realistically, a new Ivy Bridge CPU for the same purpose is going to be around the same price, maybe a little more due to the "just out" premium, and I doubt it'll last more than about a year longer. Why waste £90 on what you openly claim is a placeholder CPU...

    Rate my rig?

I'm guessing you're talking about the i3-540. Your computer should be fine. Put a £20 aftermarket cooler on the CPU and overclock the i3 to >4GHz, everything will run like a dream.

    DELETED_74993

As Ryan says, the i5-2500K performs identically for games, as does 4GB of RAM. It's generally accepted that anything over 1600MHz has very little bearing on RAM gaming performance, and timings don't really affect it at all. Get Corsair XMS3- 8GB if you like, but 4GB is honestly plenty. You need...

    Alt-Tab takes ages

Have you tried playing on maximised windowed mode? It takes a fair bashing on the FPS because it keeps all the processes running in the background, but alt-tabbing is instantaneous and your system should be able to cope.

    Improvements that are possible?

Xfire is quite popular around here, but I'm not convinced it's great value either. You need to spend an extra £20-£30 to get a motherboard that supports x8/x8 Xfire, and then another £30-£40 extra for a more powerful PSU that will support an extra graphics card, for when you upgrade. After...

    Improvements that are possible?

I think the term 'budget' gaming card is a misnomer for the £130 price point. Sure, it's £50 odd less than we were paying for them about a year ago, but they're still incredibly capable cards in the gaming spectrum. Most of us play games at 1920x1080 and want details as high as possible, but...
