First impressions & Teardown: Acer Revo RL70 AMD Sff System

Hi, I just got one of cheap ones with Linux pre-installed. I've installed another 2GB RAM, Windows 7 64-bit and Plex and it's working well - it has no trouble with high bit rate MKVs (once you enable DXVA2 :)). I'd like to use the Revo to replace my ageing and rather loud HTPC in the lounge...

Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

It will fit heightwise (assuming it comes with an LP bracket), that looks like a long card, I think you might have problem closing the door on the front of the case.

Is it worth building a server?

And old server with SCSI disks will be ugly, noisy and power hungry. Better to go for a new HP Proliant Microserver running something like FreeNAS. See the HP Proliant Microserver thread here: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18216324

I have 2x KVR-1333D3E9S/2G Kingston 2 GB/PC3-10600/Unbuffered/ECC You can get it for £18 a stick if you shop around, it's ECC and it will definitely work.

Thanks, the network is connected - I checked the logs and several updates are installed from the net before the install hangs.

I looked into this myself. There's only room for LP cards, the PSU sits above the PCI-e slots. You need something like an HP P212 that is LP and has an SFF-8087 SAS connector to use the standard cabling (another, cheaper, option is the LSI Logic MegaRAID 8204ELP) I have Highpoint RocketRAID...

Thanks, I also found some hints elsewhere that DCPromo can be an issue with the install. I'll try again with the drive in the standard bay - hopefully I can move it back to the ODD bay/controller once the system is up an running. I really want really want to keep the drive bays available for...

Win2K8 R2 Enterprise installs fine on it's own and as the 1st part of the SBS install. It's the bit where the SBS installer tries to setup roles, accounts, policies, etc. where it falls over. My server has 4GB of RAM and meets the minimum specs...

I've tried to install SBS 2011 Essentials RC (which shares the same platform as WHS 2011 and Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentals) however, the setup fails, I don't get any errors, the screen just hangs, but I was able to reboot, get the logs and register a bug on MS Connect.

Has anyone tried installing the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials Release Candidate yet? Mine's hung at 44% of the install.

I stuck with ECC. Another place is knocking out 2GB Kingston DIMMS for £18 each (I bought 2). Kingston part number is: KVR1333D3E9S/2G.

The on-baord SATA port is connected to the embedded IDE controller via a bridge. Changing the IDE/AHCI/RAID settings will have no effect. I installed Win2K8 R2 64-bit (from USB Flash) onto the 160Gb drive, connected to the SATA port and mounted in the ODD bay without issue. Have you...

What's the disk configuration on the server? From my WHS to the Microserver I get: ~57MB/sec copying to C: (160GB drive on internal SATA) ~50MB/sec to D: (4x 1TB drives in Windows RAID5) From Microserver to WHS I get: ~75MB/Sec (4x 750GB, effectively JBOD) From my WHS to my Windows 7...

The on-board SATA and eSATA ports actually hang off an integrated IDE controller; so Windows will use and IDE driver (rather than AHCI). Performance is more than adequate - I get over 100MB/sec seq. reads and writes to the supplied 160GB disk.

Maybe not ideal, but cheap and cheerful. There's some in depth reviews of running both ESXi and XENServer on the net... http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&client=opera&hs=F7&rls=en&q=hp+proliant+microserver+lab+server&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai= ServersPlus offered a bundle for just...

Hi, My tests showed that the on-board fakeRAID performed no better (and maybe a little worse) than the software RAID built into Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit. This was true for both RAID 0, 1 and surprisingly software RAID5 (when compared to on-board RAID0). Config: 1x 160GB system drive...

I wouldn't install the OS onto a RAID0 partition, especially if your using software RAID. Better to move the 160GB drive up to the optical bay, connect it to the extra SATA header and use that. Then format the data drives using the software RAID in Windows - it's has higher throughput and uses...
