Too many credit cards? aka "The Credit Card thread"

I'm going to be travelling quite a wee bit over the next year mainly by plane but with a train trip or two thrown in so I've been looking at the benefits of various airport lounges. I noticed the Amex Platinum card gives free access to many lounges albeit at a breathtaking annual fee of £650. In...

Any downsides to a smart meter?

It really is. I’ve saved hundreds of pounds since getting one along with Octopus Tracker.

Who has had their roof cleaned?

This is a very common reason for folks getting their roof cleaned. It’s not so much the roof looking bad but the amount of moss falling to the ground and blocking gutters. The gutter protectors I mainly see are wire grills over the gutters or hedgehog bristles that sit in the gutters...

Who has had their roof cleaned?

Depends on the environment around the roof but done properly a roof should remain clear of moss for a good three years at the very least. If by coatings, you mean paint, then yes the effect will be limited. Paint is just paint after all.

How are people getting on with their Apple Studio Display?

A huge factor for me was the integrated cam for FaceTime. I moved to a Mac Studio and Studio Display from an iMac so the cam integration was so important to me that I paid for the Studio Display despite thinking it was ridiculously overpriced. Having said that, the quality of the display is...

*** Official Ubiquiti Discussion Thread ***

Does that happen often? Obviously the more complex the set up, the more likely crashes are likely to happen but I'd personally be very concerned if a network switch or related device was prone to crashing...

Who has had their roof cleaned?

Pricing depends on where you live in the country. For me, £350 is very cheap but it may have been a small house considering no scaffolding was used. A very rough ballpark figure would be £1000 for a professional company working on a detached four bedroom house. You'll be looking at two men...

Who has had their roof cleaned?

Patio magic is probably a more public friendly (ie more diluted) version of DDAC or BAC50. You can buy the undiluted versions of these chemicals from a chemical supplier. You dilute them yourself at a ratio of 40:1 usually

    Over-rated / terrible movies?

I've always viewed Reservoir Dogs as a play adapted for the big screen which is why feels so different from your average film. Tarantino's early film scripts (Res Dogs, Pulp Fiction and True Romance) are all pretty much plays. There's an incredible amount of truly excellent and quotable dialogue...

Who has had their roof cleaned?

I do roof cleaning as one of the services I offer. Briefly I work from scaffolding, scrape the moss off by hand (using poles to reach the furthest points) before spraying the roof with a biocide. Do NOT ever get your roof pressure washed. Hypo is not a nice chemical to be using at any point and...

With regards to your musics, consider using a SSD with the Pi rather than an SD card. An SSD is cheaper and more reliable than an SD card. Cameras - look into Frigate which can be installed as an HA add on or separately from HA. It’s very tightly integrated to HA. You can use a huge variety of...

    Over-rated / terrible movies?

Nah. Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs are superb. Everything else by Tarantino is pretty damn awful. As an aside I also highly rate True Romance directed by Tony Scott who bought the script from Tarantino.

    Over-rated / terrible movies?

Pulp Fiction is one of the best films ever made. A true classic. It's one of the best plots and dialogue of any film, ever.

The best Zigbee motion sensors in my experience are the Philips Hue ones. Cost a lot but they’re rock solid and have never let me down. Batteries last forever too.

If you still want to use a Pi then pair it with a SSD. However, Unraid will run HA just fine. I ran HAOS for years as an Unraid VM before recently moving it to Proxmox

I’ve had one for a good few years without any issues. If it’s been integrated through Hue then you can change the sensitivity in the Hue app.

    Finally, we're getting FTTP, woo-hoo!

I was visiting my parents recently and checked their FTTP status which is identical to the info you have. I wonder if it’s a generic message as I know that fibre is being laid along the road only a few miles away and should be with them soon. I certainly hope it’s sooner than 2026
