    Booting the PC

Yeah, does sound like he's figured out the password... Hidden camera (or phone left recording) pointed at keyboard whist you've entered the password once maybe? USB keylogger? (cheap-ish on the likes of aliexpress)

    18650 Batteries. Different sizes?

yeah, the protected cells have circuitry at the top to cut them off if over discharged/charged or shorted. But afaik the limits are usually more to stop the cell getting, ummm, firery if something bad happens, rather being anything close to optimal for cell lifetime. I.e. the device using...

Sunrise / Sunset / Daylight Alarm Lamps?

I'm using an ikea tradfri smart bulb (in the main room lamp) for this. Not as good as a dedicated sunrise daylight alarm (it's just light for a start, no sound), but I didn't get it with this in mind, so it kinda feels like I got the wake up/alarm function for free :p It definitely helps me wake...

    Battery Polarity Protection

18650 batteries aren't the safest batteries to be user replaceable in general (far more likely to catch fire if improperly used), which is presumably why they're not available at supermarkets, etc, or found as replaceable things in more consumer electronics. You can get "protected" 18650 cells...

    Moving away from gas hob?

Does that matter, though? even if an electric hob costs 2-3x more to run, how much is that going to be in £ over the course of a year for most people? I'm betting not enough to care about. The amount of energy consumed (gas or electric) is nothing compared to heating a house.

    ghetto mod toy car battery?

When you connect batteries in series, the mAh rating stays the same, but the voltage increases (so 4x 1.2v 2000mAh cells = 4.8v 2000mAh battery). When connected in parallel, the voltage stays they same, but the mAh is added together (so giving a 1.2v 8000mAh battery) BTW, when looking for 18650...

Spec me a projector (and sound solution) for the bedroom wall

Depending on the aims, I think the cheap projectors definitely have their uses. I've got a really cheap (think it was <£70 a few years ago - firmly in the "toy" category) projector set up in my bedroom, projecting onto a white wall. For casually watching crap whilst half asleep, it's fine. It...

    Tell me about weather stations..?

I've got a Bresser 5 in 1 - I've had it just over a year now, and it's still working fine :) It seems to work pretty well, and I've not had to change the batteries on the outdoor sensor yet, which is nice. Only issue is the wind speed indication isn't great, but I'm sure that's my fault due to...

    Advice for daughter learning photography

I recently got a second hand Nikon D3100 with kit lens for ~£130 to play with, which I'm pretty happy with (figured if I end up not using it, I've not lost too much). It's simple enough to use in auto mode, but also has the features you'd expect from a "proper" camera (I think :p). With a DSLR...

    Smart Meters

I'm not suggesting they'll start cutting people off for one missed payment. More that they'll cut people off in error having notified the wrong person, or got addresses mixed up, or over some confusion with the previous occupant, or got meters mixed up, or any number of other ways. The current...

    Smart Meters

Well, the citizensadvice website seems to suggest that they don't need to involve the courts when smart meters are being used. But even if they do, energy suppliers don't exactly have the best reputation competency wise. If they have the technical ability to cut you of remotely, it seems quite...

    Smart Meters

It's my understanding that with a "normal" meter, to actually cut you off, electricity suppliers need a court order to enter your property and disconnect you (amusing the meter isn't outside), whereas for a smart meter it can be done purely remotely. Which one do you think is more likely to...

Component level board repair. Watch me fail here!

I got the same hot air station a year or so ago... not bad at all for the money. BTW, it looks like exactly the same one that dave jones reviewed on the eevblog:

Do we have any electronics experts on here?

Oh, sure, it could only confirm it's bad; I agree confirming it's good would require much more information and effort (and removing it). But checking if it's shorted is easy, and could tell you straight away if you've got bigger problems than just a resistor. Limited experience tells me these...

Do we have any electronics experts on here?

From the pictures/comments in other thread, it looks like the issue is with the green component, not the diode, i.e.: Diddums, if you've got a multimeter, it might be worth quickly checking for a short on (what I assume are) the two transistors attached to the heatsink close to it. If either...

Water Meters - Do you have one installed?

I was paying ~£17pm with a water meter in a flat, which went up to £58pm without a meter when I moved to house. Needless to say I quickly got a meter... it's now back down to a more reasonable ~£19pm... (single occupier).

    Renting Unfurnished - Good idea?

It's sounds like you are planning to buy at some point, so renting an unfurnished property seems like a logical step towards that. When you buy, you should already have most stuff you need, so it seems perfectly sensible to me.

    Question about significant figures

    I don't think r=0.64 can be right... there's essentially two parallel resistances: 27Ω (R2+R3) and 18Ω (R4). 0.64Ω is far too low....
