What's the writing like? That's what will swing it for me - I can still remember characters from BG2 in detail 20 years later, couldn't even tell you who my companions names are in Pillars of Eternity.
It's a much more straightforward dungeon crawl, really combat heavy compared to BG, and much lighter on story. I still enjoyed it immensely though, the fact that you create your entire party from scratch gives you a lot of flexibility in how you play.
It's never really grabbed me either. Not sure why, it's slick and enjoyable to play. I just don't miss it once I stop. I think the story is a bit obtuse, doesn't make me want to see what's next.
I would caution, however, to start on Commander difficulty. I lost interest about 2/3 of the way through the game as there was just no challenge anymore.
Yes, you have to complete the intro mission to PoF with a character, but once you do, the mounts are unlocked across your whole account, regardless of character level. Same with glider skills in HoT.
It's a pity Xeronauts came out when it did really, graphically we'd been spoiled by XCOM at that stage. As a remake of the original x-com it was excellent.
Yeah, haven't been able to get into the instance to kick the expansion off yet. Crowds of people standing around the instance point trying to do it too.
