As someone who went from the g9x to the g502, I can't recommend the g502 enough. Plus the scroll switch is on the top rather than the bottom, which is a lot more convenient when I switch from gaming to browsing.

You wouldn't necessarily be stuck with a desk mic if you went for headphones, you could get a clip on or swap out the headphone cable with a boompro

I used to use a PS3 controller, until the driver stopped working (the DS3 driver stopped recognising it, and you have to be connected to the net for it to work anyway). I now use a 360 controller (which I find too big and the triggers too stiff, but I haven't really got a choice)

Yup. You can set it as always on or off, or on but switch off when the mouse isn't in use. I set mine to switch off after a minute.

Beyerdynamic also do something similar to a boompro for about the same price, though they're a bit more difficult to find. No idea how they perform though. Also those clasps aren't reusable are they? Seems like a bit of a faff if you ever want to switch headphones.

Does anybody have a g9x as well as one of these? I'd be interested to see what they look like side-by-side (or end-to-end in profile).

I find them pretty good, but I don't play FPS so I can't comment on that.

UE6000 + V-Moda boompro

V-moda has a boom-mic that replaces your headphone cable (if you've got a set with a replaceable cable). Beyerdybanic also does one if you don't fancy importing all the way from the US.

I was thinking this too, not that there's anything wrong with mine, but the Proteus is shinier and has more buttons.

Logitech UE6000 - you can get the white ones for £72. Probably has a little more bass than you're looking for but they're solidly built and very comfortable.

I have had a pair of these for about a year now, probably the best earphones I've had. one of the rubber wire protectors has just come off but considering I tend to keep them in my pocket when I'm not using I'm not too disappointed, especially since they still work perfectly well.

Unfortunately laptops in that size with gfx cards are few and far between, I've got a Vaio S13p which has a gt640m which games perfectly well and has a nice screen, but might be a little out of your price range. I think the Asus UX32vd might have a graphics card, as does the Gigabyte U442n...

I can vouch for those, but you could probably find one for half the price if you look for a MW3 edition. Exactly the same mouse but with CoD logo on it
