    Intel TAT and temps....

System is as in sig - unless you meant something else. Used to run an Shuttle with an Ath64 3500 and GF6800, so this new box is quite an upgrade. I've not even attempted to clock it yet..... I'll give it a try

    Intel TAT and temps....

Purely because everyone seems to use it as well as TAT. Using TAT, with Workload level on 100%, both cores seem to max at 42/43C

Its alive, alive I tell ya!!

Ok, while running Orthos on the 8K FFT, and tracking with TAT, that reports 40C for both cores. Coretemp reports 41. Speedfan reports 40. I assume all are wrong? Thats with the AFPro7 fan running at 700RPM approx.

    Intel TAT and temps....

How accurate is it? Does it under estimate much? The reason I ask is that while running Orthos 8K FFT, the 2 cores are hitting 40 each. Is it ecven the right test in orthos?

RAM - you know I looked at the spec and wondered what was missing! Ended up with Geil Black Dragon 6400C5 (2x2) stuff ultimately.

Its alive, alive I tell ya!!

Never been so nervous on a build having not done a full one for 5 years. Running entirely stock at the moment (see sig), but how can I best test temps etc? I've download Speedfan 4.3.3, and at idle Core 0 - 23 Core 1 - 23 Core - 40 HD0 26 Ambient 30 Now, AUX - what is this? Its at...

Does anyone know what this is?

ARe you sure you did a net search? I found several references to it with ease! Doing a search in google for "I am service" found several hits, all in reference to ASUS.... http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.php?showtopic=70937 http://www.lewiz.org/archive/2007/06/25/i_am_service/

    Memory confusion!

So, in practice purchasing CAS4 is advised. What confused me further was the fact a lot of specs in the Gen Hardware forum that are advised generally seem to be CAS5 based. Presumably, the extra tenner or so for CAS4 is worth it then.

    Memory confusion!

I've browsed around and finding memory timings confusing. Assuming that I'm considering overclocking, whats the benefit of one of the other? Assume E2180 and Asus P5K or Abit IP35 based boards). Looking at these examples which are different timings.. and the CAS4 is more expensive of...

    Which 8800GT?

    Cheers!

    Which 8800GT?

Are these all pretty much of a muchness? Are any noisier than the others? Is there any point in buying a pre-clocked one?

    multi socket surge protector.

I use OneClick IntelliPanel - has surge protection and automatically powers up/down peripherals when you closedown the PC if you want to be green.

Dammit, rig too slow now - time for upgrade.

Yep... case would help :) Wouldn't need to be extravagant... Zen seems to be the general suggestion for a budget. I see that on the whole 95% of the hardware recommended is the same from all of you and variaton seems to be on the CPU. Not related to the Borg are you chaps?? :D

Thanks everyone... thats immensely useful.... I feel the CC quaking in its wallet!!

Dammit, rig too slow now - time for upgrade.

I have noted that people seem to go for the DS3R, or an ABit IP35 board of some description. Are they 'much of a muchness'? I I were to drop to an OC'd E2180, then the budget can go into slightly better MB I guess!

Dammit, rig too slow now - time for upgrade.

Dropping to the 2180 would give me leverage on better components elsewhere I guess.

SPW - I noticed a few people having 2nd thoughts about the Gigabyte boards. On the other hand, that spec should leave my existing Shuttle choking in its wake!

Dammit, rig too slow now - time for upgrade.

I'm assuming that at 8800GT is as high as I need for 1680x1050. On the quad question I dunno. I'm guessing it'll be overkill and that can always be done later. I doubt many games will make use of a quad!

Dammit, rig too slow now - time for upgrade.

Hi gurus! (have I sucked up enough??) After requesting a spec back in August, sadly events prevented me upgrading (needed a laptop shortly after then which took precedence). Since then things have changed hugely on the h/w front, so here I am again. I'd been struggling along, but...
