AMD admit Bulldozer has 800 Million less transistors than originally stated!!

Nope, sorry, you're both wrong - the biggest fail of 2011 is ... Britain's Got Talent. Oh, and The X Factor. Oh, and Big Brother. Especially Big Brother - when the previous series ended they made such a big deal about it being the last ever series ... and then they brought it back

Difference between OEM and Retail processor?

Nope I don't believe overclocking the cpu matters for the warranty.

Wonder which GPU makes such wonderful images

I read an excellent article in Byte Magazine a number of years ago that explained in detail how a Silicon Graphics workstation worked, and its 16 or so Reality Engines could ray-trace a scene in real time. And it took just as much effort to display simple text only, as there was no simple bitmap...

    BIOS boot times

Thanks for that, so hopefully when I decide what to get and then build a new system that will improve the boot times if I can turn off the RAID screen. On my existing Asus A8N-SLI Premium I am not aware of any way to turn off the 'press ctrl-h to show RAID setup' appearing for about 10 seconds...

    BIOS boot times

Oooh that's pretty impressive: 19 seconds including POST screens. I did buy myself an SSD a few weeks ago to improve things - I knew I wouldn't get the full benefit using XP on my older system, but I thought it would improve things until I got a new system. However my lovely Asus A8N-SLI Premium...

    BIOS boot times

Hi everybody Just wondering if anybody has any info on boot times with various motherboards - I'm particularly interested in either the Asus P67 Sabertooth and the Asus P8Z68-V. What I mean is the time from pressing the power button until the OS starts to load. On my existing setup the time...

Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

I heard a rumour that 6950's being shipped now may have the hardware fuses blown so the extra shaders can no longer be unlocked by flashing the BIOS, so may be best to buy one asap to try and get one that will work ...

    ** SINGLE GTX 580 3GB VS SINGLE 7970 3GB REVIEW BY OcUK **

Oooh the ATI sounds superb, but methinks it will be a little too pricey for my part-time job to pay for :(

New build - NVidia vs Radeon

Oh dear, so they've started blowing the fuses to physically disable the extra cores once they have decided what to sell the chip as  Well never mind, it would have been a bonus to get a little bit extra for free, but just getting a new card would be good enough anyway. Thanks for the heads-up!

New build - NVidia vs Radeon

I've hardly ever had any hardware issues (touch wood ...) - I've had around 10-12 pcs over the past 20 years and the only things I can remember failing were one keyboard where half the keys suddenly started giving random characters, a 3dfx voodoo2 that started to display some areas of the screen...

New build - NVidia vs Radeon

Oops forgot to mention the games - at the moment I only seem to play COD4, Unreal Tournament 3 and Quake 2 action mod (dont laugh at the back there - its old but I love it!) although of course any old card would do for Q2!

New build - NVidia vs Radeon

Thanks FiXiT and COYS - I'm tempted by one of the 2G Radeon 6950 cards for around £230 that could be sneakily upgraded to a 6970 by flashing the BIOS to turn on the extra shaders, I'm not aware of anything similar for any of the nVidia cards (but I could be wrong of course)?

New build - NVidia vs Radeon

I agree that whenever I checked in the past there always seemed to be a new driver released, and would usually update it - but not always. It always used to irritate me slightly when some companies would constantly release a steady stream of updates to their software, and when people have...

New build - NVidia vs Radeon

Thanks for that Rroff. I must admit I have always found that the nVidia cards and drivers I have had in the past have installed first time every time, the driver install was very smooth. The only graphics card problems I have ever had was when one of my dual Voodoo2's started producing flashing...

New build - Intel vs AMD

Cheers for that - the i5 does seem to be the general concensus of opinion. I've been wanting a new system for quite a while now, but, well you can't put it off for ever can you? There always seems to be something quicker and cheaper just around the corner, in a month or two ...

New build - Intel vs AMD

Ooh thanks for that! There are a lot of different socket types around these days, I must admit to getting a bit fed up a few years ago when I could only ever upgrade to a slightly quicker cpu - to get the next-gen cpu required a whole new motherboard and memory dimms!

New build - Intel vs AMD

Thanks for that Marine-RX179 - I think I was more or less heading that way after reading more reviews and benchmarks, and the fact that this site seems to sell a lot of them overclocked to 4.4 or 4.6, but very little evidence of Bulldozers going much quicker.

New build - NVidia vs Radeon

Hi all!! I am planning a new build, the first in quite a while. My last few builds have used Nvidia graphics cards, my current has a GeForce 7800GT 256Mb (about 4 years old now, it was the latest thing when I got it). My earliest machines used good old Voodoo2 12Mb x 2 cards, and ever since...

New build - Intel vs AMD

Hi all I have been building my own PCs and upgrading them for quite a while now, since my first 386SX 19 or so years ago, but I haven't done much in the past 4 years apart from updating my CPU to an AMD Athlon 64X2 4200+. So I'm basically out of touch with all of these lovely new CPUs and...
