RAID 1 is ok so long you have regular back-ups elsewhere. RAID 1 is good from a mechanical (disk failure) but provides NO protection against deleted files, virus or fire etc.

Does the CPU fan run? Some motherboards shutdown if a rotating CPU fan is not detected which can usually be disabled in the BIOS. Are there any audible beeps on startup?

Looks like you have effective backups so no need to spend there. Looks like a SSD would be a good choice if you have money to spare.

How much data do you have and do you have offsite backups?

HP Proliant Microserver running either WHS 2011 or WSE 2012 would my choice. Automatic client backups and server backups (selected shares or all), remote connectivity, streaming etc.

You could build a WHS 2011 box by repurposing spare hardware.

As bremen1874 said: You want a wireless access point, or a wireless router configured as one.

Download inSSIDer and check which channels are in use nearby and choose one which gives you the best separation.

Have you considered repurposing hardware you may already have available to you to build a home server? WHS 2011 is as cheap as chips, brilliant automated client PC backups and can stream media.
