Don't be embarrassed, your post reminded me of remortgaging around 2005-6, I'd got about £40k stoozed on credit cards and my bank statements were littered with payments in and out of dozens of bookies as I was doing a lot of matched betting at the time, they didn't care.
Just about everything is bought on credit, credit card for monthly fuel and food and paid off in full each month, earns points/cash back depending on the card.
Almost all purchases above £100 are bought using 0% credit, either direct from the seller or through PayPal credit where available...
A friend overpays his mortgage knowing he'd be better off financially putting it into a savings account, as soon as the value in the savings account got anywhere near 'holiday in the sun' levels his wife would be bending his ear to spend it.
Same with our mortgage lender, first direct. Payments are set up as a standing order so easy to adjust, they don't seem to care what I pay back each month and no limits on over payments.
That's where it becomes a difficult decision for parents, do you play it straight down the line 50/50, knowing that one of your children is most likely going to struggle in old age*. Or like in your brother's situation do they leave him the house to give him that extra help.

Your sister's been living in the house since 2009? Have she and her husband done any work on the house? Renovation, extension, general repairs? Has your mum decided to sell it at a price that reflects what it was worth in 2009, when your sister moved in?
With the right group it would work well, but it's your last sentence, you're now in a situation where you've neighbours threatening to sue neighbours. There's always going to be one or two who are a pain in the ****.
