Check in game sound settings? Could be the game is outputting 5.1 audio with dialogue coming from centre channel. If you don't have 5.1 set up it could be possible that the dialogue would therefore not be audible.

Digital is so much more convenient. But with that convenience you have to accept that the game has no resale value. Most of my game purchases over last couple years have been digital. Digital really should be less expensive for a variety of reasons.
