New SM kit displays power consumption via the ipmi web gui and the data is also available via the ipmi cli on some older models. Have you checked the ipmi cli for the psu data. If the data exists you could then graph it via cacti etc You can control fan-speed when the system is running...

I actually trimmed it down with a plunge-saw and the excess is to be used as either multiple shelves or one long 2M shelf. Still in the building process will be using meranti for the legs and iroko looks fab!

+1 for worktop express. I bought Iroko Wooden Worktop 2M X 960mm X 40mm for my computer desk recently. 40mm was overkill & its bloody heavy!

pfSense with an intel i3 will exceed 1Gbit of throughput easily. Make sure you install a quality NIC intel based NICs are well supported. Pf 2.2.6 is based on FreeBSD 10.1 so you can check for chipset support via the official site.
