    This Business and Moment...

Very exciting! I moved to the USA with an employer about a decade ago and still love it here! Just be aware that the US immigration system does not recognise partners (unmarried long-term relationships), meaning that if you were to get an employer-sponsored visa to move to the USA, your partner...

    Advice on coworker's smell

I work from home all the time, so if there's a stink in my office, it's me. :p Thankfully, if that happens, I can just go and take a shower in the bathroom next door. :D

    This Business and Moment...

"This is my IP so I'm going to have to insist on a legal agreement signed between me and your company that prevents you from using any of my ideas unless I'm an employee of your company." Amazon Web Services insists on interviewees signing NDAs before they can be interviewed, so why not the...

    This Business and Moment...

Why not just pick up more work? I've never had just a "day's work" to do; there's always been more work than time to do it in.

What did *you* do to get your promotion?

In the USA in tech, 3 to 4 years is the normal vesting period of an initial tranche of stocks that is awarded at hire, which is why many people in tech tend to move on after 3 to 4 years. For most folks, the initial hire grant is the largest tranche that folks would get from any given employer...

    Top Gun 3!!!

It would be funny if the movie turns into a damn squid. :D I might watch that movie. On the other hand, if the movie turns out to be a damp squib, that would be disappointing.

    Top Gun 3!!!

I watched TG1 when I was much younger so I can't say that it particularly bothered me at the time.

What did *you* do to get your promotion?

This has never been the case for me, at least since I started working professionally in the late 2000s. I stayed with my first employer as I was on a rapid progression path, but I did hit a glass ceiling after four years and couldn't earn anymore. I started interviewing and very quickly got an...

Opinion: Started job but can’t afford to travel to office?

That doesn't change the fact that bereavement leave is not sick relative leave. If I was the manager, I'd basically be saying that this "bereavement leave" absence is either going to be covered as paid vacation days (if there is any left to use) or it'll be unpaid discretionary leave. As for...

    Top Gun 3!!!

It annoyed me when they inserted a nondescript antagonist in TG2 that seemed to be a mashup of Russia and China but that they would never name. As for TG3, in this day and age of drone warfare, maybe they'll just be controlling drones in a basement in Nevada, a bit like in Enders Game. ;)

What did *you* do to get your promotion?

To answer the thread title: I interviewed for a new job, got the job, quit my previous job, and started working for my new employer.

Opinion: Started job but can’t afford to travel to office?

You lose your job and thus you stop being paid. Also, how on earth would the employee think that bereavement leave can be taken for a sick relative? The short answer is that it can't.

    Advice with pay rise letter

I agree with dowie. I personally wouldn't have stayed for a 10% pay bump and a title change. When I took a counteroffer some years ago, it was for a 33% pay rise, and a move to a much better internal team that led to a massive career opportunity for me a year later. With that said, if you're...

    This Business and Moment...

A tech firm that I used to work for had semi-annual company-wide surveys and the matter of compensation always came up as a top priority. Over the years the language softened on a compensation question, I think partly due to the execs saying every year that they're "looking into it" but never...

    Tax in UK

I paid my student loan off with automatic payments about 5 years after I graduated. My student loan balance was less than £20K though. You're welcome to move to one of those countries if you can qualify for immigration. I certainly think that my standard of living is much better now than when I...

Is the situation really this bad?

One of the issues for candidates is that some companies that are hiring are using the constrained hiring situation as an opportunity to make it a lot harder to negotiate with tactics like down-leveling, exploding offers, and requiring counter-offers for any negotiation...

Is the situation really this bad?

How much do you spend per month on your hobbies?

I do not currently fly. My father-in-law has an RV10 and my brother's brother-in-law teaches with a C172. I had a former boss who (now) flies Phenoms for a living. He spent many years teaching others in propeller planes before he had enough hours to train and then transfer over to flying jets.
